INTERVIEW: Actress Cody Renee Cameron

1.) We’re excited to welcome to our pages acclaimed actress Cody Renee Cameron; greetings and salutations, Cody! Before we meander down the proverbial Q&A Christmas pathway,

how have the final months of 2022 been treating you?

Fantastic! I’ve been riding around Hollywood on my Harley in a Santa costume, waving at people and throwing out toys to kids. I like to keep it silly around the holidays! I also just shot the first episode of season 5 of Mayans M. C., so life is good!

2.) Major congratulations on the upcoming December 16 film The Twelve Slays of Christmas! For anyone not in the know, can you tell us what The Twelve Slays of Christmas is all about and how your character of Britany figures into the proceedings?

It’s about these three girls who are on their way to a Christmas Festival when they get stuck in the snow with no cell service. They wander out for help and run across this creepy manor. Of course, they enter, and then the spookiness ensues! Brittany is the bravest and sassiest of the three girls. She’s also the hungriest! Which you’ll see when it comes out, haha.

3.) Did you know as soon as you were approached about being in The Twelve Slays of Christmas that this was a production you wanted to be a part of?

Absolutely! I’m 1 of the associate producers over at Full Moon Features, so they’re always really generous with throwing me into the films as an actor, too! I knew this was going to be a good one! Plus, out of over 300 films that Full Moon has produced, this is the first Christmas one!

4.) How are you similar to your character of Britany from The Twelve Slays of Christmas? How are you different?

She’s the most courageous of the group and gives Iggy (the creepy owner of the manor) a hard time! I’m always down for a good tease, haha.

5.) What was your collaboration process like with the writer and director of The Twelve Slays of Christmas, William Butler? Is he what some actors might call “an actor’s director”?

Billy (that’s what we call him!) was super encouraging and constantly giving feedback to the actors- which we love! He comes from the acting world, so he’s definitely “an actor’s director.” He even had gift baskets prepared for us in our rooms when we arrived which made us all feel right at home, even if we were staying in a creepy manor! Haha.

6.) You work alongside a brilliant band of thespians in The Twelve Slays of Christmas, including the likes of Dare Taylor and Lauren Ann Smith. What was it like for you to exorcise your own considerable acting chops with this ensemble?

Dare and I have worked together a ton, so it’s really easy for us to play off of each other. Lauren and I have also been friends for a while, so the dynamic of the group was really fun! Since I’m the sassy one, I just throw lots of little cheeky insults and roll my eyes at the other girls a lot. The campy acting style for these indie classics is always a joy to indulge in!

7.) How is The Twelve Slays of Christmas different than any other film out in theaters right now?

Well, to be honest, I haven’t seen the entire movie yet–only what we filmed! So all I can say is that it’s a fun-loving film where you’ll definitely be rooting for our three stranded girls to make it all the way to the end! It’s also really cool if you’re familiar with the Full Moon world because we share stories about 11 other characters who have already been established in previous films! We’re like the Avengers, creating our own universe over here just…with a slightly smaller budget 😉

8.) What do you hope moviegoers walk away with after checking out The Twelve Slays of Christmas?

I hope they get some good jump scares, laugh, hold each other tightly, and maybe even cringe a little bit! It’s a film for the whole family!…well, everyone over the age of like 12 at least. Haha.

9.) Acting-wise, who inspires you?

I love all the classic 90s heartthrob actresses like Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, Lucy Lui, and Julia Roberts. I grew up being mesmerized by their beauty and quirkiness but also by their ability to seem relatable. Like in Charlie’s Angels when Cameron Diaz is just dancing in her underwear, being all cute and silly. I love that.

10.) You made your big screen debut in the film The Neon Demon. Any special memories of that freshman production?

Ohhhhh, man, I’ll never forget riding through the iconic Hollywood Forever Cemetery on my Harley heading to set! It was my first big movie, and I felt so cool on my motorcycle. Keanu Reeves was also in the movie, and he was def one of my first celeb crushes. But not from the Matrix like you might think, it was actually from The Replacements, where he plays that all-American underdog kind of guy. *swoon* He rides motorcycles, too, and I just think he’s the coolest. Working with Jena Malone and Nicolas Refn that day was so special. I sat next to Elle Fanning in the makeup chair and just couldn’t believe this was all real. The beginning of a big dream coming true.

11.) What do you have coming up after The Twelve Slays of Christmas?

I’m actually heading to Mexico to take a little break in January, but I look forward to working on more episodes of the Mayans this season, and I also have another movie coming out soon called Mutilator 2. That was a fun one I shot in North Carolina earlier this year. I play a character but also got to stunt double a couple of the other actresses, and without giving away too many spoilers, I’ll just say I have at least one fun death scene to play in there. I mean, it’s called Mutilator, so we know people are dying, right?! We just don’t know who 😉

12.) You’ve worked as a producer in the past. Is this something that you would like to do more of in the future?

Absolutely! I think that’s sort of the evolution here where you start out as an actor and then want to be more involved and want to have more artistic control and then eventually, obviously, more money, too! I love producing because your job is to solve problems and make things happen! I’ve made a lot of connections over the years here, and I love being able to involve friends in the equation!

13.) Final – SILLY! – Question: Favorite movie about the making of movies – Living in Oblivion, Ed Wood, The Player, or Barton Fink?

Actually, I have to go off script here and say The Movies That Made Us. I saw the one about how Home Alone almost wasn’t made and all the things that came together to make this classic exist! Can you imagine a world without Home Alone?!
