CNN Cancels Stanley Tucci’s “Searching For Italy”

You would be hard-pressed to find a bigger admirer of actor Stanley Tucci than this tin-eared yellow journalist. Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle, Deconstructing Harry, Big Night, Road to Perdition, The Terminal, The Lovely Bones and Spotlight all have distinguished places of honor on my family’s sagging Blu-ray/DVD shelves. This is one thespian who consistently surprises with his choices, both artistic and commercial.

An interesting hybrid between what sells and what makes us pretentious movie fans and foodies swoon is the fun CNN travelogue hosted by Tucci entitled Searching For Italy. In the series proper, Tucci motors around the beautiful Italian landscape in search of really good food and wines. It’s a fun trifle that my Better-Half and I have enjoyed on more than one occassion and now, sadly, the news has come down from our pals over at The Hollywood Reporter that CNN has seen fit to cancel this odd little picadilly.

As part and parcel of CNN’s restructuring plan which is sending ripples throughout the entertainment world, the beleagured channel has opted to pull the plug on Searching For Italy. The show, on which Tucci also served as an executive producer, is only part of a bigger purge from the news channel of original programming. Word ‘round industry campfire (per CNN Big Wheel Chris Licht) has it that this move was “based, in large part, on the ever-increasing cost of commissioning third-party premium content”; well, since you put it like that, Chris…

All may not yet be lost however, Dear and Constant Reader: A little birdie has let it fly that Tucci is currently shopping Searching For Italy to other networks and streamers. What’s more, the ever-resillient actor has another new series debuting on CNN in 2023 entitled Searching For Mexico, so let us not cry for The Devil Wears Prada star quite yet.

In a press release announcing the moth-balling of Searching For Italy, a nameless CNN spokesperson said that “Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy is one of the most successful projects produced by CNN Original Series, garnering two consecutive Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Hosted Nonfiction Program. We want to thank the Stanley Tucci for his dream partnership. We look forward to collaborating on the upcoming Eva Longoria: Searching for Mexico, for which he serves as an executive producer.”

Arrivaderci, Stanley Tucci: Searching For Italy; it was fun while it lasted! Now onward to Mexico!
