The holidays are in full swing as people rush to and fro with bundles of presents and assorted Christmas and New Years bric-a-brac. Welcome to Christmas time, Dear and Constant Reader. Y’know, sometimes it’s too easy to lose sight among the infinite loop of Christmas classics being piped into our respective home TV’s that some really intriguing and exciting films are awaiting their own unwrapping in the months to come. One of those new and upcoming films is a sequel to the 2018 Oscar-winning animated audience-favorite Into the Spider-Verse. Entitled Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, this new chapter is but the opening volley in what is planned as a two movie follow-up to the original hit film. Today we all got an inkling of just what we can expect as a blockbuster new trailer premiered courtesy of our Steve Ditko aficionadoes over at the high-swinging Hollywood Reporter…
The new trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse – which you can see right here (Merry Christmas!) – showcases the continuing adventures of the Miles Morales Spidey as he reunites with Gwen Stacy and attempts to make heads or tails out of a rather daunting multiverse; where’s Barry Allen when you need him?
Things aren’t quite Crisis On Infinite Earths-bad (or even Secret Wars-dire) for Miles as the trailer – and co-writer and producer extraordinaire Christopher Miller – assures us of a more fun tour through alternate relaities and possibilities which “really opened up an opportunity artistically to have each world have its own art style, and to be able to push the folks at ImageWorks to develop a way to have each dimension feel like it was drawn by a different artist’s hand,” explained Miller in an early interview on the new film.
Elaborating further on just what moviegoers can expect from the colorful sequel, Miller told Empire Magazine that the two dimensions teased over a year ago (this comic book nerd simply calls these “dimensions” “parallel earths.” Individual milleage does vary.) “were what’s called Earth-50101, which we’re calling ‘Mumbattan’ – that’s based on an Indian comic-book look – and Nueva York from Spider-Man 2099’s world.”
This all looks to be like some crackling comic book movie fun! Amidst all of the holiday planning this season, don’t forget to mark your calendars for the June 2, 2023 release of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse!
