What To Binge This Weekend: ‘Schitt’s Creek’

??????

You know what’s weird? When a TV show enters the zeitgeist and then just sort of disappears. That’s especially true when it hits hard. Everybody seems to be talking about it. The show is spoken about in revered tones. Then, nothing. When this happens, it lowers the chances of people who weren’t watching during the heyday catching up. One show that seems to have happened with recently? Schitt’s Creek.

Remember when everybody was over the moon about Schitt’s Creek? It was getting talked about all the time online. It was in the zeitgeist. Schitt’s Creek swept the Emmys. Then…nothing. Nobody ever seems to talk about Schitt’s Creek anymore. Dan Levy and Annie Murphy have not built upon the popularity of that show. I will admit, I have not watched an episode in forever. It did not enter into my rewatching rotation. I have been more likely to watch a Columbo or a Seinfeld than a Schitt’s Creek, for whatever reason.

I want to amend that, so I am making Schitt’s Creek my binge recommendation for the weekend. Maybe do it for a couple weekends so you get to that one really good Christmas episode that starts with the flashback. If you are not familiar, Schitt’s Creek is about the Rose family, a rich quartet who love almost everything save for their ownership of the titular town. There, these spoiled, vain former one-percenters adjust and then, yes, learn and grow and blah blah blah, it’s a feel-good sitcom after all. However, it mostly feels like it works on that front, which is impressive.

The writing and storytelling got better as the show went on, but the cast was strong from the beginning. The parents of the Rose family are played by Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara, two comedic legends. Their kids, David and Alexis, are played by Levy and Murphy, and they are both fantastic as well.

If you enjoy a fairly light and largely feel-good sitcom, Schitt’s Creek is a worthwhile watch. Maybe its time in the zeitgeist was just recency bias. If it was, that doesn’t mean this show isn’t good. It’s just not an all-time great sitcom. Although, I do really dig that one Christmas episode.
