Living His Dream: Exclusive Interview with Professional Personal Trainer Maaz Arshad

1) tell us about yourself?

My name is Maaz Arshad and I was born in Karachi, Pakistan. I came to the US with my family when I was 15 years old and spoke little to no English. Facing the challenges of being new to this language and culture, I have learned what it means to live out the American Dream through entrepreneurship. I came from living in a packed 1-bedroom apartment with both my parents and my siblings, to building my brand from the bottom up, impacting people’s lives, and being able to support and take care of my family.

2) professional background?

I am a professional personal trainer. I started my journey in 2013 by training a few of my family friends as a hobby. The more I trained people, the more it became clear that this is what I was meant to do.

3) how did you become interested in fitness?

Coming to America as a teenager and being extremely skinny lead to a lot of bullying, especially in the early 2000s. I started working out once I got into college and liked my results and how I felt physically overall. My first client transformation was my family friend. He saw the progress I made and asked for some guidance. Showing him a healthy lifestyle, the right eating habits and the right supplements to take made a huge difference in his progress and transformation. After being bullied, I wanted to take that negative memory and turn it into something positive to not only make myself better, but to help and be kind to others as well. There is no greater feeling than knowing I can be a safe place for people and to help them achieve their goals.

4) what does a typical day look like for you?

I work 7 days a week, but every day is different. I work typically 12–14-hour days. I start with my early morning clients that want that 5AM/6AM rush. Mid-morning, I help run our GNC store with my brother. After, I have my evening clients and end the day by 10PM/11PM. Normally I have 8-9 clients that I train consistently.

5) what is your go-to workout routine?

As much as I like a good pump, cardiovascular style workouts are my personal go-too. Whether it’s a HIIT workout or any workout with high intensity to get my heart rate up where I’m sweating and really feeling the burn.

6) favorite post workout meal or snacks?

Typical right after my workout I have protein shake. This helps the body begin to quickly heal from the micro-tears in the muscle from lifting. This actually makes the muscle stronger over time. Anything with high protein after a workout is crucial to help refuel your body. Bananas and mangos are my go-to snacks.

7) what does a typical healthy meal looks like for you?

A high protein diet is what I always strive for. Fueling your body with high protein and making sure to properly recover is a must. The better you recover, the better you will grow. Some of my favorites are chicken, steak, and ground turkey.

8) favorite quote

Hard work always overpowers talent.”

9) describe yourself in 3 words

Hard working
Passionate
Focused
