INTERVIEW: JULIETTE IRONS

Juliette Irons, welcome to VENTS! Can you tell us about your latest single, Skydive?

Skydive is an alternative pop-punk head banger written about the confusion that comes with an abrupt end to a whirlwind romance. I felt like someone led me onto an emotional rollercoaster, thinking we could both jump and fall together, only to reveal after it was already too late, that this person was never going to jump, and I was already on the ground alone.

It’s a really vulnerable and powerful release; how did it feel to write it?

When I wrote it I felt manic from the heartbreak. Very emotionally unstable and completely thrown off by the way it had ended. I needed something to help me understand and cope so this song became that. When I first wrote it I actually hurt my neck from dancing around so much to it in my studio, almost like it was the anxiety relief that I needed. I couldn’t stop listening, it was as if this song was there for me now that the person no longer was.

We love the lyrics; has it always been easy for you to express yourself in metaphors?

Thankyou!! And yes! It did take a few years for me to find my groove with writing but once it clicked I just knew it was my strength, I’ve always been obsessed with words and imagery. I have a very visual mind since I have synesthesia, so I see letters, numbers, and sounds (and alot more) as colour. It definitely fuels my creativity.

What do you hope your fans take away from Skydive?

I hope that anyone who listens to Skydive can feel empowered by heartbreak and feel like they can get up and dance around about it with me, like we are going through it together instead of feeling confused and alone.

As a choreographer, dancer, creative director and producer, you take full control of your music career; how important is creative independence to you?

Creative independence is everything to me! I always have a vision for my music. Music videos are my absolute passion so to be able to be in charge of how they are going to look and the whole process is actually something I truly love. I am also an intense perfectionist so I feel the need to be in total control of every aspect of what I do even though it is so much to take on.

Skydive is part of a two-part story; what can we expect from the sequel single, and do you have a release date yet?

Yes! The 2-part project is called “The Fear Of Flying” which is the title of the sequel single. It is the 2nd part of the story, alternatively it’s a brutally honest ballad and covers the sadness and struggle of having to let go of the idea that deep down I still hoped this person would somehow come back to me one day. It also is something that got me through this whole experience, but interestingly I didn’t write it until almost a year after I wrote Skydive, because I had to go through the next part of the relationship in real life to be able to say what is said in this song. Once the song was written I then realised it was the 2nd part of this project without ever having that intention. It was almost as if it wrote itself, like it needed to be released out of me.

Any plans for a debut album?

Yes!! The title is not yet revealed but I definitely will be releasing it in 2023, and you can expect a full album of multi-genre heartbreak to dance to!!
