The beauty of soccer is that anything can happen. And this is something that the World Cup being played in Qatar is making clear.
We started the World Cup with several surprises in the first matches, among which Japan’s victory over Germany undoubtedly stands out. Although specialized sports betting sites in Japanese, as you can see here, were already saying that the Japanese team could surprise and be a much tougher opponent than most fans thought, the rest of the world was surprised by the good work of the Japanese team.
Another relevant surprise was the draw between Morocco and Croatia, where the Moroccan players managed to draw against the team that is currently runner-up in the World Cup, after losing their final against France in the last World Cup in Russia.
But if there is one surprise that stands out above all others, it was the victory of the Saudi Arabian national team against Argentina. A match where the Argentine national team did not manage to be comfortable at any time and, despite winning most of the match, the fact of doing so by the minimum difference of one goal allowed the Saudi Arabian players to fight until the end and ended up winning the match with two good goals. With a very strong pressure and a good positioning of the players on the field, the Arab team made it clear that in a World Cup any rival can lose against another one that is more motivated, focused and accurate.
This blow was so strong for Argentina that its qualification to the round of 16 of the World Cup is now in doubt, since in the last match of the group stage it faces Poland and, if Saudi Arabia wins its match, only one of the two will be able to advance in this World Cup. Even if Mexico beats Saudi Arabia and Argentina does not win, Mexico could qualify along with Poland, with Saudi Arabia and Argentina being eliminated. This would be a great failure for a team that started out as one of the favorites to win the world champion trophy, at least by the sports bookmakers if we look at the odds they offered for this bet before the tournament began.
If Morocco’s draw with Croatia was a big surprise, the victory of the Moroccan team against the Belgian national team was no less so, a team that every year receives the confidence of many fans around the world as the “revelation” team of the championship, but always ends up playing a role that is not as outstanding as expected.
Although the World Cup has already left us with several surprises, we are sure to see some more in the following stages of the championship, where theoretically inferior world teams manage to leave out some of the great favorites to win the World Cup.
For the moment, the team that has managed to avoid any surprise against has been the Brazilian national team, the great favorite in all the polls to win the World Cup. And no wonder, as they have a team that individually is the best in the world by far, despite being without Neymar when he was injured in their opening match against Serbia. In fact, after seeing how some of their main competitors are playing, they have risen even higher in the polls to win the World Cup title.
And you, who do you want to win this World Cup?
