Ranking seasons of Psych has been fun, and to me it has been interesting. Delving into a show that is defined by being solid, yet unspectacular, makes an episode-by-episode ranking of each season a different sort of exercise. Now, I arrive at the fifth season. Psych didn’t go as long as some other shows I have covered, but a couple more seasons are on the docket. There is a point where the show dips considerably. I’ll let you know when we get there. For now, here’s season five, ranked episode by episode.
16. “Ferry Tale”
15. “Shawn and Gus in Drag (Racing)”
14. “Chivalry is Not Dead…But Someone Is”
13. “Romeo and Juliet and Juliet”
12. “Yang 3 in 2D”
11. “Not Even Close…Encounters”
10. “In Plain Fright”
9. “Dead Bear Walking”
8. “We’d Like to Thank the Academy”
7. “The Polarizing Express”
6. “Feet Don’t Kill Me Now”
5. “Shawn 2.0”
4. “Viagra Falls”
3. “One, Maybe Two, Ways Out”
2. “Dual Spires”
1. “Extradition II: The Actual Extradition Part”
This may actually be the best season of Psych. That took me by surprise. Sure, that just means it is “quite good,” but that’s not too shabby! The bottom few episodes are middling. A couple I skip in my intermittent rewatching. That being said, the top three are in my top 10 episodes of the show.
“Dual Spires” is fun, because it’s a massive riff on Twin Peaks that brings in a lot of the cast of that show and pays a ton of attention to detail. “The Polarizing Express” is a Christmas episode heavy on references and dream sequences, but it’s enjoyable, if a little sweaty. This Yang episode is probably my favorite of the three as well. And hey, they “went back” to Canada for another episode! And it was the best one of the season!
Now, I feel like this is a bit of a last hurrah for Psych, though I know my favorite episode is still yet to come. Still, well done to Psych for being as strong as ever in its fifth season.
