Ted, welcome to VENTS! Can you tell us about your latest single, Revolution Then?
The imagery in the lyrics is incredibly visceral; how do you want your listeners to feel when soaking it in?
The imagery that I see when I think of the lyrics bring forth scenes of crowded masses of angry people watching an execution whilst intelegent men sit in the pubs solving the world’s problems.
We love the radical nuanced messages paired with the dreamy indie alt-folk style; it’s a stunning contrast; was there any artist in particular who inspired your colourful ambient tones?
I’ve always liked pink floyd. As a guitarist, saxophonist and student of history, I find their music challenging, compelling and relaxing all at the same time which I’ve tried to incorporate into my own music. One of my favourite lyrics in the song “breathe” is “Run, rabbit, run
Dig that hole, forget the sun
When, at last, the work is done
Don’t sit down, it’s time to dig another one.” It’s such a disturbing verse but at the same time relaxing and comforting.
Not many artists are willing to get political with their lyrics; what is your take on their political silence?
The lyric “revolution then” is more of an observation than a political stance. More recently I’ve seen both side of the political spectrum decide to become violent and extreme. Most notability seen in the states. The phrasing of the term illustrates a certain calmness and comfortability. Such that it’s just another revolution. I used the French revolution as a contrast to modern day to show what is historically known as a bloodbath of common men and political notables alike.
What’s your favourite piece of gear in your home studio?
Right now my jazz master. Such a versatile guitar and is incredible to play.
Any big plans for 2023?
My last EP I released “dilapidated” was a collection of music I wrote after seeing sick patients whilst working as a radiographer. I would like to express something more positive or perhaps less close to home. I’ve started writing a song about childhood fears which is going to be more upbeat and I would like to incorporate some fun and uplifting ideas.
