Classic Agatha Christie Thriller “The Mousetrap” Heads to Broadway in 2023

Despite being recognized as not only the longest-going theatrical play around the globe, wordsmith Agatha Christie’s celebrated and taut thriller The Mousetrap has never made an appearance on the ever-famed Broadway. Perhaps some well-meaning mensch who oversees what does and what does not make the rounds on the Great White Way has finally woken up from his or her seventy year-long slumber to rectify what must surely be an oversight, as news today from our friends over at Variety has it that The Mousetrap is finally set to make its Broadway debut in 2023!

Long heralded for its “Didn’t see that one coming” twist-ending, the Broadway iteration of Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap is being brought to those vaunted New York City stages courtesy of producers Adam Spiegel and cohort Kevin McCollum.

“I am thrilled that Agatha Christie’s beloved murder mystery that changed popular theatre and has been a landmark attraction for U.S. visitors to London’s West End for the past 70 years will now be coming to Broadway,” McCollum said in a Friday morning press release. “I’m excited for the huge Christie fan-base in North America, and for the acting company in New York who will join the esteemed ranks of ‘The Mousetrap’ alumni.”.

Not to be denied his own moment of exhuberance, McCollum’s co-producer added that “There can be no better way to mark today’s milestone in ‘The Mousetrap’s’ illustrious run, than to look ahead to a production in New York. I feel after the longest out of town try-out in history, ‘The Mousetrap’ is finally ready to transfer to Broadway.”

The addition of The Mousetrap comes at a critical time for Broadway, as the still-rebounding from COVID-19-hit institution has struggled to reclaim its spot as a booming mecca of art and tourism dollars. Christie’s far-famed story – which has been kicking around on one stage or another since 1952 – might just be the shot of commercial juju needed by the Great White Way to recover its footing.

As mentioned above, 2022 marks an important year for The Mousetrap: At the grand age of seventy, its been rightly lauded this year with a well-received showing at the Nottingham Theatre Royal and, going from there, will perform at no less than seventy venues in both the United Kingdom and in Ireland. Where to go from there is all but obvious – Broadway bound!

The Mousetrap will premiere on Broadway on 2023.
