Born in the spring of 2011, Wolf 926 lived for seven and a half years. Late in 2012, during the Wyoming wolf hunt, her well-known mother, the “06 Female,” the founder of the Lamar Canyon pack, was shot and killed. Her daughter eventually became the pack’s alpha female. Wolf 925, her partner and the father of their six puppies, was the only other adult in the pack.
926F, also known as Spitfire, grew up surrounded by strangers who tracked her and her family’s every move. When the pack arrived in Wyoming and the beta male, 754, was slain by a hunter, tragedy struck the group; when a hunter slew 926F’s mother in the same place, tragedy struck again.
On November 24, 2018, a trophy hunter who took his gun and sped to Silver Gate on a four-wheeler shot 926F dead. Because humans had always been a part of her existence, she had no idea to be afraid of that man, his noisy machine, or the sharp bullet pointed her way.
“926 Raindrops – Gift of the Wild” – A Book by Gloria Straube Dedicated to the Alpha Female
In her book, “926 Raindrops – Gift of the Wild”, Gloria Straube recalls the famous wolf, devoted to giving readers a story bursting with a nature-inspired wanderlust for wild things intertwined with fate and a twist of true love.
In novelistic detail, Gloria Straube describes the compelling tale of 926F, a magnetic alpha female. 926F was a powerful leader – kind and forgiving, as well as a fiercely intelligent fighter. The beautiful alpha female had a following all over the world and was adored by wolf watchers, especially the wild lover Gloria Straube.
When she visited Yellowstone National Park, she came across an unusual mentor, a wolf, who taught her what any other academic institution could never teach her: the art of living in the face of adversity. The wolf showed her how to face fears and bounce back even stronger. It is through the courageous wolf’s astute guidance that Gloria emerges as a strong and fearless woman.
However, Gloria’s savior, 926F, lost the battle of her life in 2018 when a cruel trophy hunter took her life. But, 926’s amazing teachings and life lessons were deeply instilled in Gloria, and it encouraged her to write a book. The book was a remembrance of Gloria’s time with 926 when she roamed freely with her pack in the National Park.
Until the very end of 926F’s life, she encountered countless hardships and catastrophes, but she always found a way to endure and go on. This is why Gloria considered the famous alpha female as her teacher, as she taught her never to give up.
