German Film Festival Berlinale to Honor Director Steven Spielberg with Golden Bear Lifetime Achievement Award

With Steven Spielberg’s latest film The Fabelmans currently making the awards show circuits, it seems like the famed auteur is everywhere. As tremendous admirers of Mr. Spielberg, we couldn’t be happier. After all, this is the mensch who has consistently inspired us with a filmography which is nothing short of jaw-dropping: Duel, Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Empire of the Sun, Always, Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan, A.I. and Catch Me If You Can are just the A-list titles from the maestro which instantly spring to mind (with apologies to all of you Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park fans out there). It’s hard to find a single acre of pop culture imagination which doesn’t in some small way bear the tell-tale fingerprints of Spielberg. Luckily, we’re far from the only ones who feel this way, as is evidenced from the news today from our comrades and The Color Purple fanatics over at The Hollywood Reporter

Steven Spielberg is penciled in to receive an honorary Golden Bear award at the esteemed 2023 Berlinale Film Festival for a lifetime of crafting and weaving cinema magic for audiences all around the globe.

In a career that ranges from directing ill-fated Twilight Zone follow-up Night Gallery to the careful nuances of such films as Amistad and War of the Worlds, Spielberg has been a name to reckon with in the world of entertainment, scoring no less than nineteen Oscar nominations and a whole passel of nominations from also-rans like The Golden Globes and Emmys. That’s a whole lot of recognition already, but who are we to stop our German brethren from adding yet another laurel to Mr. Spielberg’s already-crowded mantel space?

“With an incredible career, Steven Spielberg has not only enchanted generations of viewers all over the world, but has also given a new meaning to the ‘cinema’ as the factory of dreams,” enthused Berlinale director duo Mariette Rissenbeek and Carlo Chatrian of the 1941 director. “Be it in the everlasting magic world of teenagers or in the reality that history has carved forever, his movies take us to a different level, where the big screen becomes the adequate surface for our emotions to be fulfilled. If Berlinale 2023 represents a new beginning we couldn’t find a better start than the one offered by Spielberg’s great work.”

So get those Frequent-Flyer Miles handy, Dear and Constant Reader: The 2023 Berlinale Film Festival is slated to run from February 16 through the 26th! Congratulations on the recongnition, Mr. Spielberg!
