Babehoven Brings Unexpected Sincerity And Maturity To ‘Light Moving Time’

I was not expecting to enjoy the new (and apparently first!) Babehoven album. I had heard the band’s music in the past and it was…weird. It felt performative to a degree. I heard a couple songs I enjoyed, but then I kept going and hit a wall. Babehoven’s output lost me, pushing me away in a manner it felt like they would have been pleased with.

That being said, because I had listened to Babehoven before, their new songs were being recommended by Spotify. The singles were my first look at the album cover art for Light Moving Time which is, well, weird. Offputtingly weird! I despite the album art for Light Moving Time…and I love the album. It is, I believe, my favorite album of 2022.

Evidently, Babehoven’s lineup changed, going from a trio to a duo but with only one member, Maya Bon, being part of both. The vocals were never my problem with the early Babehoven, or even the instrumentation. If Bon was writing the lyrics for the early work, Light Moving Time represents a real seachange on that front, and for the better.

While the album cover may be weird, the music is beautiful and the lyrics poignant and powerful. It’s way more sincere than I ever anticipated from Babehoven. There’s no being held at arm’s length involved, but also no navel gazing or oversharing. Not only is there nothing offputting in the music on Light Moving Time, there is so much that gripped me. It’s a genuinely emotionally-engaging album, one I have already listened to a few times (plus my many spins of lead single “I’m On Your Team,” which encompasses the album nicely).

Sure, I never want to look at the album art for Light Moving Time, but I happily will listen to the album’s contents. It’s a beautiful thing in an unpleasant package, and some of the best music I have heard all year.
