What You Need to Know About Cosmetic Procedures

It used to be that cosmetic surgery – things like perfect teeth and hair “plugs” – was thought to be exclusively for the elite; A-List Hollywood actors and the like. Now such things have become more mainstream, but there might still be a bit of a social stigma in day-to-day life.

Though it seems like everyone is getting a little work done, not everyone would brag about it in the workplace…

It’s understandable, choosing cosmetic procedures can sometimes be due to deep insecurity reasons. A person might want to fix something they’ve been incredibly self-conscious about for years, maybe even their entire life. Many people want their results to be subtle and natural, not too perfect, just perfect for them.

The Rise of Cosmetic Procedures

People are becoming increasingly comfortable about cosmetic procedures thanks to celebrities like Wayne Rooney, who admitted to his followers on Twitter that he had a hair transplant.

The procedure used to be referred to as hair plugs as the results would look pluggy in nature, like the hair on a doll. Thankfully the modern day hair transplant is a lot more natural looking, at least most of them are.

The downside of cosmetic surgery becoming less of a taboo means that a lot more people are feeling pressured to get things done and achieve a certain “look” that might be popularised on social media. This leads to people looking for cheaper options, which then leads to them travelling abroad to get the procedure done – known as “cosmetic tourism”.

A procedure gaining popularity lately is being dubbed “Turkey Teeth” online, with the BBC already releasing a documentary about it. Whilst you might initially picture a big bird with teeth, it actually refers to people travelling to Turkey to get whiter than white veneers.

But do you really need to travel abroad to get it done? Or could you simply stay locally and search Teeth straightening Cardiff and the like on Google to find somewhere on home turf instead?

Cosmetic Tourism

Whilst there are many stories of bad surgeries abroad, it doesn’t instantly mean that having cosmetic surgery done in a different country equals danger and bad results. Much like cosmetic or “plastic” surgery is shedding its bad reputation, so is travelling abroad to get it done.

There are many people that get safe, excellent work done abroad. There are also many people that experience “botched” surgeries in their home country. So just because it’s a different country doesn’t mean it’s bad and just because it’s in your own country doesn’t mean it’s good either.

The biggest issue is when a procedure is oversold, many people just need light work done on things like their teeth but instead go and get huge life changing surgeries instead. The key is understanding what you’re getting…

Why Cosmetic Surgery Isn’t Always Bad, Wherever You Go

No matter if it’s home or abroad, whilst there are some bad practices and bad results, cosmetic surgery shouldn’t be demonised. As much as it is used by seemingly already “perfect” people to continue defying age, it is also used to improve a person’s quality of life.

For example, a person may have had some sort of illness or accident that scarred them in some way and cosmetic surgery will repair that damage.

Researching and Reading Reviews

Whether you are thinking of going abroad for a procedure or doing it nearer, the most important thing is to do as much research as you possibly can. Don’t be fooled by good looking social media with thousands of followers and perfect results every time.

Whilst you should definitely read reviews, take both good and bad with a pinch of salt…

Good reviews could be coming from people who have been asked to review straight away in exchange for a percentage discount, results for the majority of cosmetic procedures take time, so to review it straight away is not accurate.

Similarly, if a place seems good but has a bad review, it could put you off, but be aware that reviews can sometimes be fake and posted by a rival cosmetic surgery or someone who was denied a procedure.

Try to find and speak to people who have had a procedure done at the place you’re interested in. Try looking for smaller social media and YouTube accounts of their experience. Celebrities and those with large followings can’t always be trusted as they’ll have been given preferential (and maybe even free!) treatment.

Whatever you do, start with local experts first. Many offer free consultations, so you can learn as much as possible before going ahead with anything.
