Channing Tatum and director Steven Soderbergh are hoping to make their third time at the box-office dance pole something quite special for everyone. And with today’s brand-new trailer for Magic Mike’s Last Dance, it looks like they might have actually succeeded, turning two improbably fun and substantive movies into a bona-fide trilogy.
From our Showgirls and Big Monty fanatics over at the ever-dancing Variety (eat your heart out, Deney Terrio) comes a day that a lot of us have been waiting for – The first trailer for the upcoming Steven Soderbergh film Magic Mike’s Last Dance has officially landed, and is it a doozy; Check it out right here!
Considered by some to be the Rocky of male stripper movies, Magic Mike surprised a lot of people with its out-of-nowhere success. Perhaps that’s because the films director – aforementioned Mr. Soderbergh – had up until that dance-eriffic flick made his name as an ernest auteur of such films as Traffic and Sex, Lies and Videotape. The joke was on all Doubting Nancy’s however; the Bubble director brought to Magic Mike a sensibility and humor that was more than big pecs and off-color jokes. That empathy for the underdog brought big dollars at the box-office and – lo and behold – a hunger to see more of these characters and this universe in other movies.
Billed as the final chapter for Tatum’s Mike character, Magic Mike’s Last Dance features the usual suspects acting-wise along with the welcome addition of actress Salma Hayek. The plot itself has been a closely guarded secret, though today’s trailer lets a lot of grateful cats out of the proverbial bag. The jokes seem broader, the stakes even higher and everyone seems to have brought their nest game for this last entry.
“I want it to be the Super Bowl of stripping,” enthused Tatum about the final chapter for his character. “I want dancing like we’ve never been able to do in the other two movies, because we had to be honest to what the reality of that world is, which isn’t great dancing.”
The Super Bowl of stripping?!? You just gotta admire the blind ambition, Dear and Constant Reader. We’ll all be along for one last ride when Magic Mike’s Last Dance hits movie theaters worldwide on, coincidentally enough, the weekend of the actual Super Bowl – February 10, 2023!
