Elizabeth P.W. Vents Premiere

Elizabeth P.W. is a Brooklyn-based composer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer with a passion for storytelling through music. She weaves together her love of folk music with modern cinematic elements to create evocative and intimate scores for film and tv, and songs that tell compelling stories through unique soundscapes.

Her musical work has premiered in films at the Tribeca Film Festival, Hollyshorts, DOC NYC, Urbanworld Film Festival, and Raindance. She’s written the music for everything from non-profit campaigns to congressional campaigns. In the Summer of 2019, Elizabeth released her debut folk album, Haven’t Found It, to critical acclaim. Now, in 2022, she is releasing her next album, The Company You Keep.

The folk album is composed of songs with an acoustic sound and a personal touch. The album was written during the height of the pandemic when Elizabeth was completely isolated. She has Crohn’s Disease, so when some people could isolate themselves in bubbles, she could not. She had to find new ways of maintaining her relationships with friends and family.

“I noticed that in isolation and with all the chaos that was going on in the world, relationships changed quickly and sometimes severely. It was like being a pressure cooker, everything was on display. And in my isolation, ruminations ran wild,” shares Elizabeth. “This was a blessing and a curse. To have the time to figure out your relationship to yourself and others is a gift we may never feel so strongly again, but it was not without pain, heartbreak and discord.”

The title song “The Company You Keep,” explores the toxic side of a relationship that she once experienced. She sings “I can feel your vitriol across the hudson” accompanied by wind instruments like the clarinet and a beat outside a drum set, like a wooden block or tapping shoes. The melody and the percussion are not synced with each other until the final resolve of the song, of course symbolizing the disconnect between the couple.

“The way the instruments are recorded also adds to the unconventional soundscape,” Elizabeth says. “The whole idea for the production was to pay homage to some of my favorite songwriters of the 70s while creating something new – shiny on the surface with something rotten underneath.”

The Company You Keep is an 11 song album that has a strong similarity to Sara Barielles and Ingrid Michaelson meets Glen Campbell. Her instrumentation and passionate songwriting is beyond words; she incorporates the piano, wood winds, unique percussion, the acoustic guitar, and the banjo in her work giving depth and color to the album.
