The Bangles Susanna Hoffs Scores Film Deal for Debut Novel “This Bird Has Flown”

Back in the mid-to-late 1980s, you couldn’t throw a rock without hitting at least six Walkman’s simultaneously playing a jaunty tune from super-pop group The Bangles. Comprised of Susanna Hoffs, Michael Steele, Vicki Peterson and Debbi Peterson, this band indelibly insinuated themselves as a part of the soundtrack to the leives of anyone and everyone that grew up within spitting-distance of the 80s. Their hits may have ultimately been few, but brothers and sisters did they cast a wide and deep shadow which continues to this very day: Manic Monday, Walk Like An Egyptian and Eternal Flame were the key song titles to that era. If you had asked anyone back then what they projected in the future for the respective members of The Bangels, chances are not many well-coifed folks would have picked out the profession of ‘author.’ But that’s precisely what has transpired with the news today from our ever-lovin’ pals over at The Hollywood Reporter that a genuine member of The Bangles is not only a published author, but –better yet – a published author with a movie deal; let the party commence!

So here’s what you should know and all that is fit to print: Co-founder of The Bangles Susanna Hoffs can now boast having a coveted movie deal set up for her debut romantic novel This Bird Has Flown. The deal was finalized with Universal Pictures nabbing the rights and Liza Chasin and Bruna Papandrea producing the whole shebang.

‘But what’s it all about’, you may be asking yourself right now. Luckily for you, we have some handy-dandy answers: This Bird Has Flown follows the story of an apparently washed up musician who catches herself falling head over heels for a roguishly good looking British literature professor (they’re a dangerous sort, those handsome English profs, wot?). Drama, romance, misunderstandings, etc. Shall ensue from that simplest of plot set-ups, no doubt.

In a press release announcing their involvement with Hoff’s book-to-film, Chasin and Papandrea enthused that they “knew we had to team up again when we read Susanna’s incredible book. She literally had us at hello! Her experience in the music biz and her deep love for big romantic movies made it so clear to us that we wanted to work with her on the adaptation. And the icing on the cake is getting to do it with the brilliant folks at Universal.”

As survivors of the 1980s – oy, so very hazy it all was! – we’re all aboard this new career twist for fellow 80s inhabitant Susanna Hoff! Keep those antennae tuned into Vents for any and all information on This Bird Has Flown!
