How Willis Hicks Moved From Personal Tragedy to Helping Families

The idea that “one day can change your life” isn’t just some trite saying; it’s a reality for many people in today’s economic landscape. One day you’re planning your retirement years; the next, you’re left with a gaping hole and a pile of bills following the loss of a loved one. Willis Hicks, the founder of the Hicks Insurance Agency, has experienced firsthand the pain of being thrown into an unfamiliar world without much hope of getting back on your feet again.

In his 20’s, Willis’ life was changed forever when his wife was diagnosed with cancer. Unfortunately, the family didn’t have adequate insurance coverage, which overwhelmed them with medical and burial expenses. After her death, Willis had no time to process his grief; he faced the reality of raising their two infant sons as a single father. With the additional expenses it was difficult and  he soon lost  his families home.

That led to a difficult life for the next 28 years, working at an unfulfilling job with UPS; however, the pay barely covered his expenses. Working for 11-12 hours each day left Willis with little time for his family or to do things he enjoyed. Additionally, he had to slough through an unexciting and impactless job that still left him struggling between paychecks.

Everything changed when Willis took early retirement from UPS and started his own business in the fitness industry as a fitness and nutrition coach. Then, in 2020, COVID happened, and the world shut down. Willis found himself at a crossroads again, but the transition was inevitable because the business was no longer profitable. That left him in dire straits, so he began looking for a job to help him pay his bills and, in the process, stumbled upon the life insurance industry.

The insurance world opened up a host of possibilities for Willis. Even though he didn’t know much about its operations, he saw the opportunities it presented him to help other families in similar situations as he was in when his wife died. So Willis joined the Family First Life franchise and started learning the trade tricks. Fortunately, the business model provides agents with the tools and systems they need to succeed from the get-go.

Willis leveraged that support and became a full-time agent. His dedication helped him quickly master the learning curves after the initial trial and error, and Willis soon became a top Hall of Fame producer in the FFL network. He’s worked relentlessly over 2 years and has amassed impressive results for all the hard work he’s put in.

The Hicks Insurance Agency currently has over 15 full-time agents, and at least half are on track to make six-figure incomes by the end of the year. However, Willis isn’t one to be shortsighted; he looks beyond the immediate surrounding and, thus, aspires to how he can impact the community. His current goal is to multiply his impact through his team, which he hopes to grow to over 1000 agents in the next two to three years. He also hopes to pass along his knowledge and skills and build wealth for his family while helping his agents achieve financial freedom.
