SINGLE REVIEW: I Like It (When I’m With You) by LAZY GUNS

The up-and-coming Australian indie rock band Lazy Guns has just released their second single, I Like It (When I’m With You). The new track is a guitar-driven combination of raw post-punk intensity with traditional Australian rock, with a 2000s rock revival spirit. As front man and lyricist for the band, Jack recounts, ‘I Like It (When I’m with You) was written three years ago and quite unconventionally! It was originally written—and consequently rehearsed for two years—without lyrics. When it came to recording our album, I finally sat down and wrote (them).’ Taking their cues from various sub-genres and influences, I Like It (When I’m With You) has swagger in spades and a bold, defiant urgency. Speaking on the song’s subject, Jack explains that he paralleled Oasis’ reference to Sally in Don’t Look Back In Anger: ‘A mystery girl that doesn’t really exist.’ The track kicks off in a familiar style, an AC/DC-like rhythmic pulse and guitar riff that’s soon slightly modified by a bluesy lick. The first verse appears above the drums and guitars, with the bass fleshing out the bottom end when verse two comes around. From there, it’s straight into a power-packed chorus, a chord change, a more sustained strumming manner and then a second peak with the chorus tag that seems to fuse a bunch of influences into one: Stones, The Dandy Warhols, etc., an evocative mix that highlights the band’s abilities as well as their tastes. We’re back into an alternate re-intro and another verse—complete with cowbell break!—to segue into chorus two. The bridge is a two-part affair, with various riffs and a drop that releases us back into the final chorus and one final lunge with the recurring riff. I Like It (When I’m With You), reminiscent of Green Day, Foo Fighters, and AC/DC, will help the band generate momentum before releasing their highly anticipated first album.
