Sick Puppies Release “Ready Steady Go” Single

After six years between records, Sick Puppies were at a crossroads. A global pandemic had struck the world and taken it by storm, and an entire US presidency had eclipsed the global news cycle and ended in that time — the world was not the same as it was when 2016’s Fury initially released, and new times called for a new musical approach. Fast forward to 2022, and the Australian hard-rock trio is finally just about back with a new record for the fans. Before it’s time to reveal details on that, though, they haven’t been sitting idle in stasis for all that time; they’ve been beefing up their sound with the help of a new single, “Ready Steady Go.”

“Ready Steady Go” finds Sick Puppies at a very interesting place in their careers. It’s not a new work from the group, as it originally belonged to a 2002 release under the same name, from artist/DJ/producer Paul Oakenfold, but to get back in the swing of things after so much time off, inspiration will strike in the weirdest ways we could never anticipate. Sick Puppies took the original track and tossed it into a rock/metal blender, shifting the percussive beat into something far darker and heavier than originally intended from Oakenfold. The sparse vocals remain true to the original track, but the static effect on the vocals feels sharper, more present, and pressing with the song’s new rush of blood to the head pacing. It’s an energetic, knockout revival of a band beloved by many, and it promises an interesting approach for whatever 2023 has in store from Sick Puppies without giving away anything.

Allowing their first song after over half a decade of radio silence on the musical front to be a cover track is extremely confident and, for old fans, maybe a little stressful! There are no hints at what the band has been up to, no real “lead single” release for a record that allows the audience to gauge the temperature on the LP. It’s a toe-dip in the water for Sick Puppies, but the confidence is more than enough for the group to call their shot — they’re ready to rumble, and they’ve only grown better with age and time.

Helping the band advertise the single, “Ready Steady Go” has been attached to a commercial campaign for the NHL. The track’s rough exterior and beating heart of a rhythm section make perfect sense to put in a commercial for hockey games, one of America’s more dangerous professional sports, and the way the intense imagery complements the track will be greatly beneficial for the single, I’m sure. The overall image-conscious decision to release a song so bombastic and rough, but with the safety net of tying it back to its genesis as a cover of a pre-existing song, is a brilliant decision from a band returning from a much-needed creative hibernation. The rejuvenation of Sick Puppies is clear on “Ready Steady Go,” and whatever comes next will only blow the hell out of whatever has been fortunate enough to remain standing in the new single’s explosive afterglow.
