Hi VIA, welcome to VENTS! How have you been? Hi, VENTS! I’m so happy to be here sharing with everyone! Recently, I’ve been preparing the visualizer shooting for my EPs, so I’ve been busy and fulfilled.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Catch 22”? This song is originally from my vulnerable personal experience and then I added a little imagination to the mix, which is the same way that I created my other songs in this upcoming EP1. It’s kind of a hallucination but at the same time, I really want this to be real. It’s about the feeling of “having butterflies in your stomach” for someone. It’s insecure, craving for answers and it’s brand new and familiar at the same time. Mood swings up and down, rise and fall, breathe and drown, and it’s precious to feel this feeling. So I froze this feeling in this song for everyone to feel and remember.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song? Yes, as I mentioned, it was an incredible experience I had in real life. I felt this way with a person who had brought me an intense level of happiness and insecurity at the same time.
Any plans to release any sort of video for the track? Yes, I have a Lyric MV for this song and a visualizer video for this whole EP concept and it’s in the making right now.
How was the recording and writing process? It was a smooth writing process: late at night, in my home studio, with my big window melted into the dark night and stars, I turned on my Rhodes and just played a chord progression of how I was feeling and then filled out the melodies and lyrics right after. But for the chorus lyrics, I perfected it the next day. The recording process was fluent too and I hope this recording captured my expression for this song to everyone.
What role does living in China play in your music? I think initially Chinese culture that I absorbed when I grew up was very subtle and profound, and that had impacted me in various ways of expressing myself. For example, I really loved Ancient Chinese Poetry when I was little, and the rhythm and rhyme of it and its subtle emotions really helped me observe everything in life through this compassionate lens. For now, I think living in China has been supporting my sense of security, knowing that my parents are not so far from me, and having my dog, my cat and my childhood friends around has been playing an important role in my life. But still, I’m planning on getting more study and industrial practice in the States next year for further growth of my artistic self and my vision.
What is it about the 70s and 80s that you find so fascinating? Well, I would say it’s the spirit of it that’s shining through the cloud and dust. What I am trying to express through releasing this dual EP concept is that people are becoming isolated more and more with the development of technology development and the post-pandemic environment. We are drowning in this matrix world that high tech has built for us, and we seek happiness all the time, but what is true happiness? Is scrolling over your phone on social media true happiness? It’s an illusion. Happiness was all so simple, and pure, and it’s on the ground, and it still is. That’s why I miss the old days, the golden time. I miss the glory, passion and hope. I miss the artisan spirit from that time, people are becoming impatient these days for everything. I miss that vintage touch of focus and dedication.
Does the new single mean we can expect even more new material – how’s that coming along? Bingo, you’re right! There are 2 EPs coming our way, and the visual world me and my visual director BWLN built. Please be patient and you’re going to love it!
If so, any tentative release date or title in mind? The first EP is going to release around early November, and its visualizer (short film) is going to release before the EP drops. The first EP is called “Hallucinating POV” which is the bait for the second EP.
What else is happening next in VIA’s world? She will break something, open the door for something, and I would say Fearless and Freedom are what is going to come along.
