Starz Renews “The Serpent Queen” for Second Season

All hail the queen!

That Lionsgate television network known as Starz knows a good thing when they see it – and so do their Catherine de Medici-lovin’ viewers: Per those rascally Royals over at the ever-regal The Hollywood Reporter comes the not entirely unexpected news that Starz hit series The Serpent Queen has been granted a Royal pardon from television purgatory and been handed a sophomore season. This bit of welcome news and good tidings comes just as the Samantha Morton-led series is wrapping up its first season, with the season finale set for this weekend; no My-So Called Life eternal cliffhanger happening here!

In a press release touting the second season renewal, Starz Big Wheel Kathryn Busby said that “The Serpent Queen is distinctly modern, darkly comedic and completely unexpected. Catherine De Medici’s story is the perfect complement to our female-forward slate, and Samantha Morton’s brilliant portrayal of this ruthless, charming and savvy queen anchors the whole production. We’re thrilled to unveil more of her incredible life and reign in season two, which promises to be even more provocative and sublime.”

Like a lot of the best television right now, The Serpent Queen is based off of a popular book, this one specifically being Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France from author Leonie Frieda. The freshman series scored an early coup when it was ordered straight to series (the Hollywood equivalent of winning the Lotto) at the start of 2021. This order was famously a part of Starz Big Wheel and CEO Jeffrey Hirsch’s push for what he dubbed “premium female” television for watchers that underlines a strong raft of content which theoretically would appeal to women spanning the ages of twent-four to fifty-four who have a proclivity for yarns about notable women throughout history. Of course in the day and age of “word salad” (or PC run amok; pick your poison), Hirsch’s coinage of the term premium female has since been altered to “female forward.” Whatever. All that really matters for us fans of The Serpent Queen is that this particular part of Starz’s outreach at least worked, with a brand-spankin’ new season of this gem of a series en route to prove it.

The Serpent Queen shares a Starz roster with a handful of other original series that would do any queen anywhere quite proud indeed: P-Valley, Blindspotting, Run the World, Party Down, Outlander, Dangerous Liasons and the Power franchise all stand proudly shoulder to shoulder with The Serpent Queen as some of the best that television currently has to offer.

No word on an air date for the second season of The Serpent Queen, but we’ll keep all of our ever-lovin’ readers posted on any and all information on this series as it rolls into us!
