It appears that Doctor Who and Co. are going to need a bigger time-traveling telephone booth…
What do you get the multi-trillion dollar entertainment empire that seemingly already has everything? Lucky-ducky you, Dear and Constant Reader, we (and our partners in pop culture crime over at The Hollywood Reporter) have the answer to that oddball query – The House That Uncle Walt Built has on this very day acquired the coveted streaming rights to the fan-favorite BBC series Doctor Who; happy 60th anniversary, Good Doctor!
In a week that’s already shaping up to be a busy one for Doctor Who fans (in case you missed it, we just ran an item regarding actor David Tennant returning to his signature role as Doctor Who), this is one bit of news that will surely make some waves. Under this new deal, Disney has exclusive rights (with the BBC still retaining first viewing rights, natch) to stream every upcoming season of the series. Long rumored, today’s announcement officially put the deal between Disney and the BBC in hard stone.
In a press release announcing the deal, Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies said that “I love this show, and this is the best of both worlds – with the vision and joy of the BBC and Disney+ together we can launch the TARDIS all around the planet, reaching a new generation of fans while keeping our traditional home firmly on the BBC in the UK.”
Don’t look for the Good Doctor to hobnob with Mickey, Goofy and all of the other traditional Disney creations, however: This is one franchise that is staying firmly in its own well-tread back yard of sci-fi and head-spinning yarns.
“For Doctor Who to have the backing of two of the most innovative and respected media organizations in the world is a testament to the unique drive and vision at the heart of this show,” enthused Jane Tranter & Julie Gardner, both Big Wheels at Bad Wolf, who co-produce Doctor Who in conjunction with the BBC. “Bad Wolf are beyond delighted to be once again working with the genius that is Russell T Davies and, with the exciting new partnership between the BBC and Disney, we can together reach to even greater heights, producing from Wolf Studios Wales ambitious stories through time and space for audiences across the globe.”
We’re looking forward to seeing the profile of the Good Doctor rising far and wide with the Disney+ streaming audience! Keep your eyes and ears peeled – OUCH! – to Vents for any and all further news on Doctor Who!
