INTERVIEW: flawes

1.) We’re excited to welcome to our humble abode one of the most exciting bands on the recording scene, Flawes; greetings and salutations, gang! Before we dive down the proverbial Q&A rabbit hole, could you all say ‘hi’ and introduce yourselves to our ever-lovin’ readers?

HELLO I’m Huss, I play drums (usually too loudly) in flawes

Hey I’m JC, I’m the singer in flawes

Hi! I’m Freddie and I play the guitar

2.) Congratulations on the brand-spankin’ new single Is It Any Wonder which is currently burning up the airwaves! JC., how did this gem of a tune come about? Is there a VH1-Behind the Music story you could share with us?

We wrote Is It Any Wonder whilst on a trip to LA, on the very first day as it happens, straight off the plane! It’s all about realizing someone’s true colours and documents the exact moment of deciding to cut ties within that relationship.

3.)  Freddie, who was the producer on Is It Any Wonder and what did the collaboration between band and producer look like in the studio?

We collaborated with a producer called Simon Oscfroft on this one. He’s a super talented musician based out in LA. The time we spent in the studio with him was awesome – fast paced and super creative! He’s also a guitar player, so we had a lot of fun dialing in that crazy sound you can hear in the solo.

4.) Huss., how is Is It Any Wonder absolutely different from anything else on the 2022 music landscape?

‘Is It Any Wonder’ is certainly a more raw sound than flawes have ever produced, it’s fast paced, honest and it’s a song that means alot to the three of us. There are certainly elements that don’t differ from the 2022 music landscape (fast pace, 80’s vibe, guitar solo etc) but I do feel this song is authentically flawes to our core and stands alone in that. And I love it.

5.) JC., what do you hope listeners walk away with after giving Is It Any Wonder a few dozen spins on their respective turntables?

It’s quite a confident and empowering song so I’d want people to let it all out whilst listening to the song and afterwards feel up beat, positive, ready to take on the world.

6.) Freddie, how is Is It Any Wonder similar to some of the past music of the band such as Look No Further? How is it different?

Look No Further was a bit of a turning point for us as a band. The songs we’d written prior to that were all a lot slower, super ambient and generally more laid back. Although it feels slow in comparison to the music we make now, Look No Further was the first mid tempo release and it also felt a lot more like a pop song than previous singles. Is It Any Wonder still leans on that pop sound but the core band elements are a lot more pronounced – lots of guitars, live drums and a powerful lead vocal!

7.) Huss., with the release of Is It Any Wonder can fans look forward to an LP release from Flawes in 2023?

I’m not at liberty to disclose that information… but I can certainly say you will be hearing a lot more flawes music in 2023 🙂

8.) JC., is Flawes keeping busy on the touring circuit for the latter-part of 2022?

I hope so, playing live is why we do what we do! I can’t wait to get back out there and play these new songs! (Keep your eyes and ears peeled for announcements)

9.) A question for all of you: Musically, who inspires you?

We all have quite eclectic but different taste in music! I’m (Freddie) into blues, country and pop music whilst Huss is a big fan of rap and bands like Blink 182. JC has always loved Coldplay as well as acts like Holly Humberstone and other newer artists. I think that variety helps us bring different colours into the writing process.

10.) Freddie, Is It Any Wonder is released via Red Bull Records, What makes Red Bull the perfect home for the band and your music?

Red Bull have been so supportive of us as a band. Although we didn’t realise it at the time, when we first signed with them we really weren’t ready to release an album. They recognised that and stood by us while we found our sound and figured out the direction we wanted to take. You hear stories of artists being forced into things by their record label but that really isn’t the case for us – Red Bull are always really encouraging of our ideas, however crazy haha.

11.) Huss., the music video for Is It Any Wonder is fun and dynamic! How much creative control did you and the other guys exorcise for the finished video?

We were lucky enough to have free reign to do whatever we wanted really! We wanted the video to portray the excitement and energy of the song and I think it comes across that we were genuinely having fun on set. (we also love balloons as you can tell)

12.) JC., and final thoughts on Is It Any Wonder?

Fun fact, there is no ‘?’ at the end of ‘Is It Any Wonder’ as when I sing it i’m not asking a question. Instead it’s more of a statement or thought. The song predicts that at some point in the future the person I was in a relationship with will realise what they’ve done, the penny will drop and they’ll think ‘Is it any wonder’ that they were left.

13.) Final – SILLY! – Question (for all of you!): Favorite movie about the music scene – This Is Spinal Tap, Almost Famous or The Commitments?

Huss. This Is Spinal Tap 100% – I wish I could wear those outfits on stage.

JC. My film knowledge is pretty poor tbh, i feel embarrassed to admit i’ve never actually heard of ‘Almost Famous’ or ‘The Commitments’. We used to watch ‘Spinal Tap’ all the time though and I actually met Harry Shearer once haha!

Freddie: Spinal Tap! That film is quoted at least once a day back in my family home…
