Back in the day, in a galaxy far, far away, the news of a brand-spankin’ new Star Wars movie was actually a big thing, eagerly hoped for and anticipated by fans of writer-director George Lucas and his Western franchise disguised as a cosmic space opera. The original trilogy captured the hearts and minds of folks from all walks of life, from all around the globe and all of that good will extended itself into the late 1990s when the prequel trilogy landed into movie houses with much fanfare. One of the unique aspects of Star Wars, Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader and all of the rest was that their visits to movie screens were such a rare thing, like connecting with old friends you hadn’t seen in years. When Lucas bowed out of the Hollywood scene and sold off the property to Disney all bets were suddenly off and the friends who would occassionally drop in to say ‘hi’ and regale you with tales of their latest galactic adventure suddenly became that really annoying guy at the party who – long after everone else had opted to call it a day – refused to go home. Star Wars was even more prevalent than it had been under the 20th Century Fox tenure, innundating viewers with more films and television shows than they knew what do with. It was 24/7 Star Wars all the time, and even the most devout fans of the franchise might be forgiven for suffering from cinematic fatigue.
Star Wars on the big screen has taken a little time off in recent years, leaving most of the storytelling to its television cousin with a variety of series ranfing from really good to just plain old meh. News from our pals over at The Hollywood Reporter today indicates that the film-end of things for Star Wars is about to take off yet again, with some big names officially attached to write and direct the latest tales of tragedy and triumph…
A brand-new Star Wars film has officially been green-lit, with writer Damon Lindelof (Lost) set to write the story alongside an as of yet unnamed co-scribe. Assuming directing duties for this new cosmic tale of wonder will be Ms. Marvel phenom Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.
Not content to simply bring fans one Star Wars flick, Disney is going all-in with no less than two, with one set for a December 2025 release followed by another one set to hit movie screens in December of 2027. It’s not known at press-time which of those two opening day slots the Lindelof/Obaid-Chinoy feature will occupy.
So Star Wars is headed back to the theater screens and you can bet your collection of 1970s Marvel Star Wars comic books that we’ll keep everyone posted and up-to-date on any and all information about this exciting resurgence!
