Pizza. It’s beloved. Meat eaters enjoy it. Vegetarians enjoy it. Even vegans can eat pizza, though vegan cheese has not been perfected yet. Cheese pizza is solid, but of course toppings are fun. The best number of toppings for a pizza? That would be two. It’s about pairings. The most-divisive pizza topping? Pineapple, of course. Can pineapple work on pizza? We say yes! However, it should never be your lone ingredient, and it needs the right pairing. What should go with your pineapple on your pizza? We have thoughts.
Let’s start with a meat pairing. Pineapple is somewhat sweet and quite acidic. There is a citrusy tang. As such, a spicier meat is maybe not the best idea. For example, Italian sausage or pepperoni is not a good choice with pineapple. Ham is the popular one, but ham is frankly not great on pizza in general. Honestly? It’s another well-trodden food on the meme front, but bacon pairs best with pineapple. It has that cured, saltiness to go with the sweet acidity of pineapple. On top of that, bacon on pizza tends to be cut small and crisped up big time. That’s a nice fit on pizza.
Now, a pairing for vegetarians. It’s definitely not mushrooms. Mushrooms and pineapple? That sounds insane. Onions aren’t a nice pairing either. We are definitely going into the realm of peppers, and we like to bring the spice. It’s all about jalapeno and pineapple. Heat and sweet in equal measures. If you want to try pineapple on pizza and give it the best chance of working possible, we’d definitely go with jalapeno. Unless you need meat on your pizza. Then, go bacon. Either way, enjoy!
