Hi Julia, welcome to Vents! How have you been?
Hi there! I’ve been doing ok, mentally getting ready for winter (I’m more of a summer person, wish it was hot all year!).
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Knots”?
I’ve been really excited to release this song since it’s the first song I produced myself that I’m actually proud of! It was a lot of fun working out the details, and getting good reactions from friends and family before the release. And for the first time a song of mine has been added to Spotify editorial playlists, so I must have done something right 🙂
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
It’s nothing recent, but I was inspired to write the song when I was thinking of a past friendship gone sour. He was sort of my best (and only) friend at the time, and when he confessed he wanted a romantic relationship, I really wasn’t ready. Things got pretty ugly after that and we haven’t been in touch since. And that whole thing led me to think about how we sometimes make decisions out of fear : fear of change, fear to take a shot, fear to mess things up. I found myself wishing I could make more decisions out of courage, and take all of these daily small decisions we make more lightly.
Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?
I was working on a music video for the track, but unfortunately it got delayed due to some mental health issues I’ve been struggling with. I hope I can still finish the video and release something for the track, but I can’t give a certain date at the moment.
How was the recording and writing process?
Honestly, this one came pretty easily to me. I was doing this weekly beat production challenge for my Instagram followers, and this song was part of it – so a rough idea was ready within a day! Later, my followers picked this song to finish up and release, so that’s what I did. I did all the recording in my home studio, with my trusty Slate condenser mic. I finished the production in Ableton live, sampling sounds, taking favourite elements from artists and songs I love and combining all of them together. Then I had a friend, Jay Rence, do the mixing and the mastering during LANDR sessions et voila, that’s it!
What role does Hamburg play in your music?
Hamburg is the city I grew up in, so I’m guessing it plays a big role in all my music. But, since the music I love isn’t as popular here, I take more inspiration from UK artists, such as Joy Crookes, Jorja Smith, Mahalia, etc. I would love to dive into the UK music scene some day – or just have a portable small studio in southern Spain and enjoy sangria on the beach after a recording session haha.
Does the new single mean we can expect new material – how’s that coming along?
I am working on some new material with a UK producer, however I had to pull the breaks due to the above mentioned mental health issues. I’ve been planning a release for this November, but I might have to push that to early spring next year. It will be a collection of songs (EP) which I’m excited to share. And of course there’s always a bunch of ideas on my hard drive which I’m working on, some of which I’m really stoked to finish and release.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Yeah, one of the singles will probably be called “sad bitch”. As for the release date – as said probably next spring.
What else is happening next in Julia Karr’s world?
Finally on my way to get some therapy which I find exciting. And maybe I’ll be able to finally fulfil my dream of adopting a puppy next year if all works out well.
