Domestic violence, sexual assault and harassment, child, early and forced marriage, sex trafficking, and female genital mutilation are all violence against women and girls. It originates from the persistent discrimination that females experience from early childhood into old age. Many of those who commit acts of violence against women and girls do so because they think it is acceptable and accepted by society. The perpetration of violent acts is condoned in their eyes.
As one of the most common forms of human rights abuse, it has far-reaching consequences for victims’ health, happiness, and the well-being of their communities. Women are finally expressing that they have had enough and are working together to put an end to violence against women. One of such women who have lent their voices to the moment is Candace Boissiere.
Candace was born and raised in the Caribbean and has had a really rough life. Since she was a child, she has endured physical and emotional abuse at the hands of multiple people. Candace now uses her experience to help other victims of abuse of all kinds find strength in sharing their own stories and overcoming their challenges. She uses her talent in the kitchen as a form of therapy to overcome the trauma she experienced as a child.
After enduring physical, mental, and emotional abuse at the hands of a perpetrator, survivors of domestic violence may face long-lasting and brutal consequences. Suppose the perpetrator was particularly violent and/or persisted in their abuse for a long time. In that case, the victim may need some time to readjust to life without fear. Knowing the percentage of domestic victims struggling to lend their voices and tell their stories is high, Candace started a Facebook support page for these victims.
While it may seem impossible to face this trauma, doing so can aid in the development of inner strengths and reduce survivors’ fears for the safety of themselves and their families. As one who has experienced physical and emotional abuse firsthand, Candace is very aware of the importance for survivors and their loved ones to remember that healing is a process that may take quite some time. Individual differences in stress tolerance, chronological age, and the frequency and severity of abuse all play a role in the wide range of reactions to this kind of trauma.
On her journey to becoming a loud voice in the movement of stopping abuse of all kinds, Candace had several challenges. For her, the biggest obstacle she had to overcome was being a pushover. It took a lot of conscious effort to have a voice of her own and not always do what people want or expect, even when it doesn’t please her. Candace has taken the bold step to tell her story to the world and remain authentic in her truth while helping other victims fight and overcome their battles.
Candace’s decision to create a Facebook page solely for the purpose of sharing her story of abuse was also influenced by others who told their own stories through their vlogs during the COVID-19 lockdown. As a survivor of domestic violence, Candace is committed to helping not only women but also men overcome their experiences of abuse and move forward with their lives. You can catch Candace on Instagram as @trinimericans and on Facebook as Candace Juliana Boissiere, to learn more about her healing journey and to get some moral support.
