As an emerging journalist, you are already working with mainstream news platforms in Pakistan and a few years back, you were selected as one of 100 emerging journalists from around the world to participate in an exciting media program (Future News Worldwide 2018) organized by British Council Scotland. Before we dive into your journey as an aspiring journalist, can you tell us a little bit about your background and how you got interested in this field?

I was born and raised in South Waziristan, a beautiful region in Pakistan that is rich in culture and history. As a young boy, I was always fascinated by stories and narratives, and I knew from an early age that I wanted to pursue a career in journalism. Over the years, I worked hard to develop my skills as a news writer, immersing myself in different forms of media and focusing on topics that interest me. Unlike the tradition in our country, my prime objective was to focus on journalism education and training and then start a professional career in journalism. Through my involvement with various media projects and departments over the years, I have been able to gain invaluable experience working with both established professionals and journalism scholars. So overall, it has been quite a journey for me as an emerging journalist. But through all of my highs and lows along the way, one thing has remained constant: my deep passion for telling authentic stories about people’s lives and experiences through the power of media.

How can having an educational background in journalism help you in your professional career, and what challenges might you face in this field?

Based on my experience studying journalism, I believe that having a strong understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of the field is essential for success in the practical realm of journalism. This is because each written or spoken word has the power to shape public opinion, and so it is critical that journalists are aware of and adhere to ethical guidelines when engaging with their audiences. Additionally, having a solid education in journalism helps equip journalists with the analytical skills needed to assess and investigate complex issues, as well as better understand how to craft compelling content for different types of audiences. Overall, I believe that a robust education in journalism provides a valuable foundation for any aspiring journalist looking to make an impact in this rapidly changing media landscape.

Given your background in education and research, how would you say that your current PhD program will help you in your future career? What are some of the skills and knowledge that you hope to gain through this program, and how do you think these might impact your professional goals? Additionally, what challenges or obstacles might you encounter during this process, and how do you plan to overcome them?

To that end, I am currently pursuing a PhD in Journalism, which aims to provide me with a deeper theoretical understanding of the field. Through my research, I hope to gain insights into best practices for journalism in the age of mobile media, as well as become better equipped to navigate the challenges that can arise within today’s media environment. Generally, whether you are just starting out in your career as a journalist or are an experienced reporter looking to deepen your knowledge, I believe that having a solid foundation in journalism principles and ethics is essential for success.

What are your plans for the next few years, and how do you see this degree helping you achieve those goals?

I would say that it is extremely useful to have foreign journalism exposure for anyone working in the field. First, a foreign exposer allows you to gain valuable knowledge and perspectives from other parts of the world, which can inform your work and help you to better understand different audiences and communities. Additionally, it provides opportunities to build relationships with other journalists and media organizations, which can lead to new career opportunities and partnerships down the line. Overall, I believe that having foreign exposure is critical for any journalist looking to advance their career and make meaningful contributions in today’s rapidly changing media landscape. In the coming years, I am looking to build my career in journalism and work with respected news organizations here in Australia.
