Doing many things at once isn’t as productive as you might think. The reason? Our brain can only focus on one task at a time. What we commonly call “multitasking” is nothing more than jumping from one task to another which affects poor work performance and lost time.

Multitasking is so common that we often come to believe that we can do many things at the same time. Big mistake. How many times have you asked yourself that question, “where did I stop” to pick up an activity again?

Frequently switching from one task to another (the switching, as we called it earlier) contributes to limiting our short-term memory. We don’t give ourselves the time to let our brain process mental cues about things we’re putting off until later. What happens then? Our stress explodes and we become forgetful. This is another major danger of multitasking.

It’s impossible to manage your stress level at work if you never feel like you’re getting your chores done. Think for a moment of the tremendous satisfaction that comes when you complete a project or accomplish a task. That sense of satisfaction comes much later, if at all, as you get used to multitasking. If you always procrastinate on unfinished tasks, you always need to measure your progress and manage your stress.
