Diving in Nusa Penida with the majestic Manta Rays is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. That’s why we decided to add this dive site to our list of recommendations. Not only will you get to see Manta Rays, but also hammerhead sharks and other species of fish that can’t be found anywhere else.
About Diving In Nusa Penida
Manta Rays are some of the most majestic creatures in the world, and you can get up close and personal with them in Nusa Penida. We’ll be diving with these graceful giants daily, a truly unforgettable experience. They appear here year-round, but they are at their best during seasonality.
You’re going to have an incredible time in the area, which has been designed for safety and comfort. You can get a dedicated cabin for both divers who don’t want to share rooms or those who prefer privacy (in which case we would recommend booking two beds).
You’ll also have a bathroom inside your cabin that’s shared between two bedrooms but has private doors, so it won’t feel cramped when sharing with another diver like yourself!
About the Mantas
Manta rays are the largest of the rays and can grow up to 20ft long. They have no strings, so if you’re diving with them, it’s safe to swim right next to them! Mantas are filter feeders, meaning they eat plankton by swimming through the water with their mouths open.
Mantas use a very interesting technique for feeding: as they swim through the water, they use their front fins to create vortices that make food particles swirl around them like snowflakes in a blizzard. The mantas then catch most of those particles using their gills or mouth before moving on.
Are Manta Rays a Conserved Species?
Manta rays are a threatened species. They are vulnerable to overfishing, which means that their numbers may decrease if they remain fished in large numbers. However, Manta rays are an important part of the ecosystem and play an important role in tourism.
And because of how many people travel from all over the world to dive with them, it is very important for us not to disturb them or take any part of their body that we could sell on the black market (i.e., their gills).
How does Diving in Nusa Penida feel?
Diving Nusa Penida is nothing short of amazing. With its incredible marine life, fascinating dive sites, and great diving community, Nusa Penida has become one of the premier dive destinations in Indonesia.
The best time to dive in Nusa Penida is from November to May, when the water is warm, and the current is reduced. However, this does not mean diving in Nusa Penida is impossible at other times of the year. You can still see manta rays, sharks, and turtles, but you may have to dive deeper than 30 meters or so.
The best places to dive are at Manta Point, Gili Islands and Gilis Besar, and Menjangan. The best way to get there is by seaplane or via charter from Bali.
There aren’t any hotels specifically designated as “dive resorts,” but many do offer dive packages if you want integrated accommodations during your trip (they often include equipment rental).
The island also has a fantastic diving school called Sub Aqua Dive Center at the Mangrove Hotel that offers courses from beginner to advanced levels. They have excellent instructors who will make your experience memorable and fun. The dive center also offers a scuba equipment rental service if you need it for your stay on the island.
How to Get to Nusa Penida?
Getting to Nusa Penida is easy, but it will take some time. You can fly from Bali to Lombok and then take a taxi or shuttle bus to the port at Bangsal. From there, you’ll board a ferry that takes about 3 hours to arrive at Bangsal Port on the east side of Nusa Penida Island.
Conclusion
There’s no denying that these creatures are majestic, and should be protected. If you’re interested in seeing manta rays—and swimming with them, if possible—you can do so in Nusa Penida.
