Most folks today know the name “Robert Downey” in connection with such film-fare as Less Than Zero, Chaplin, Wonder Boys, Zodiac and a whole slew of Marvel Studios superhero flicks (Iron Man, The Avengers, etc.). The Downey which pretty much the entire world knows in 2022 however is but a continuation – a legacy, if you will – of the original and (for our money) just as innovative creative force known as Robert Downey Sr. And now, according to our Putney Swope admirers over at The Hollywood Reporter, a big spotlight is about to illuminate all of the many contributions the elder Downey lent to the world of arts and entertainment via a brand-new Netflix documentary which Oscar nominated actor Downey Jr. Is serving as a producer on entitled Sr.
Netflix’s Sr. is set to introduce a whole new audience to the wily charms and maverick sensibilities of the late independent filmmaker Robert Downey Sr. Directed by Chris Smith of Fyre fame, this deep-dive is already garnering major Oscar buzz in the industry, so much so that Netflix and its assorted gremlins are actively pushing a full-on awards push in the months leading up to the Academy Awards.
Downey Jr. is actively supporting the film, with word ‘round industry campfires that the Home for the Holidays and Tropic Thunder star will actively be campaigning for this love letter to his late father who passed away just last year at the age of 85. Bolstering the spotlight on the doc will be a release on Netflix proper, anticipated to drop on the streamer before the end of 2022.
“We’re grateful to have Netflix partner with us on this highly personal project,” the Downey family said in a press release. “They’re the ideal home for our unconventional, oft absurd, brutally in-depth homage.”
This wet-behind the ears yellow journalist first clued into the magic which is Robert Downey Sr. in a film which was, ironically enough, not directed by Downey Sr. In Paul Thomas Anderson’s classic film Boogie Nights, Downey Sr. had a blink-and-you’ll-miss-him role as a harried record producer attempting to explain the rules of recording an album to a very coked-up Dirk Diggler (Mark Wahlberg) and cohort Reed Rothchild (John C. Reilly). Though a brief bit, Downey Sr. chewed up every moment he was onscreen and left a lasting impression on a whole new generation of moviegoers; now that’s talent!
