“The Karate Kid” 2024 Movie Update: “Cobra-Kai” and Its Creators and Cast NOT Involved in Upcoming Sony Movie

Talk about a Crane Kick to the head…

Just a couple of weeks ago all of us intrepid gremlins here at Vents were roundly celebrating our very own version of an All-Valley Karate Tournament win with the news from Sony that they were preceding with an all-new Karate Kid movie firmly set within the continuity of the original four movie franchise. Eschewing our normal due diligence, we naturally assumed that this meant that Daniel LaRusso, Johnny Lawrence and the Spirit of Mr. Miyagi were once again big-screen bound, set to unfold for viewers an epic story too large to be contained on a mere TV screen. Sadly, however, ‘tis not to be…

In the biggest loss since John Kreese blew the ‘84 All-Valley, our friends over at COMINGSOON.NET have revealed the unfortunate news that Sony’s upcoming 2024 Karate Kid film will have no direct ties to the Cobra Kai Universe, effectively operating as a stand-alone.

During a social media blitz, co-creator of Cobra Kai Jon Hurwitz broke a million-and-one hearts when asked by a fan what details he could give regarding the upcoming Karate Kid flick. Hurwitz remained diplomatic in best Mr. Miyagi fashion, saying that he had absolutely nothing to do with the new Sony movie.

“The guys and I would love to make Karate Kid and Cobra Kai movies and hope to someday. But this one isn’t from us or focused on the Cobra Kai cast. Don’t know much about it, but wish it well,” Hurwitz explained to the fan via social media.

A brief synopsis from Sony does exist for 2024’s The Karate Kid and, per Hurwitz and his claims, it appears to be quite separate from anything established within the so-called Miyagiverse: The new movie will focus on a character called Li who is coping with a recent tragedy which has driven him and his mother far apart. Li will apparently befriend a fellow high school student named Mia. Seems that Mia’s Old Man will wind up being trained in the ways of Kung Fu by Li. All of this makes us scratch our heads and long for the days of the abysmal The Next Karate Kid when continuity – loose though it might be – was still, you know, a thing.

Dry those puffy eyes, all of you Cobra Kai fans: Though the new Karate Kid movie sounds more dud than reverential box-office hit, we still have more seasons of Cobra Kai forthcoming;  Say it loud, say it proud: Cobra Kai never dies!
