Saoirse Ronan Steps Back Into Time for Upcoming World War II-Era Film “Blitz”

There’s something uniquely timeless about Oscar-nominated actress Saoirse Ronan, a quality which lends itself just as easily to modern day tales as it does those stories which are set in the far-flung past. If you don’t believe us, just take a quick – and very abbreviated – gander at this talented 28 year old’s filmography: First garnering serious attention with Joe Wright’s World War II romantic epic Atonement, Ronan felt both of our time and a step out of it, perfectly lending her talents to the film before making an even bigger splash in director John Crowley’s 1950s coming-of-age fable Brooklyn. Of course this American-born Irish thespian can do the modern scene too, as was evidenced in the critical darling Lady Bug. The point is that Ronan has not met an era that doesn’t absolutely adore her, yet her True North always seems to lead her back to the land of Times Past…

Saoirse Ronan will return to the past in 1940s style with the upcoming World War II film Blitz which is being directed by Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave), according to our Jack Finney admirers over at Variety.

So what can fans of Ronan, McQueen and WWII theatrical epics expect with Apple TV+’s Blitz? Word ‘round campfire has it that the new film will focus on the stories of a small group of London citizens as they attempt to endure the Nazi aerial bombings of their proud city during the course of the so-called “last good war.” Acting alongside Ronan in the film will be what some cloak and dagger pundits in the industry are calling an “unknown newcomer.”

Blitz is being directed, written and produced by McQueen (who, by the by, is no relation to the legendary Steve McQueen of Bullitt fame; just to clarify). The film proper is expected to head into production later in 2022.

As noted above, Blitz will be headed our way courtesy of Apple TV+’s Original Film branch and the film will mark a reunion of sorts between McQueen and production shingle New Regency , one of the producers of the new film. Prior to this, New Regency and McQueen made a splash with 12 Years a Slave; here’s to hoping they can replicate some of that special alchemy from that earlier film.

We’ll keep everyone up to date on Blitz and Ronan’s return to Times Past; this looks to be one production that’s going to be mighty special!
