Moody Bank$ is a creative person who grew up in Torrance, CA. She began creating art early in life, painting, creating fashion pieces, and writing scripts. She cemented herself as a successful indie musician with a unique soulful style akin to mainstream pop music and R&B. Her latest project and first full-length studio album is “Feeling Colors,” which was freshly released on September 16th.
The beloved lo-fi R&B production returns, accompanied by improved yet true-to-style vocals that tell an emotional story throughout the project.
“Feeling Colors” opens with an emotional track titled “Note To Self” which features a deep ambiance with moody keys and dancing violins. It makes for a grand opening track that nicely ties into the project’s close.
“Work It Out,” released as a single leading up to the release of the EP, is a more upbeat and funky tune about working things out in a relationship.
“Joy Ride” is a spiteful track with a sassy and sadistic intro chant which also functions as the chorus. The slow, chugging Lo-Fi beat maintains a somewhat ambiguous atmosphere.
“Sticky Situations” is another funky track with impressive vocal delivery. The bass in this track has a carefree vibe. The overall impression from this song is that Moody is stuck, done with someone, yet still wants them.
“La La La” has an ominous and chugging beat, layered beneath a multi-faceted vocal performance. The verses are punchy and follow the cadence of the rhythm. This song represents Moody’s choice to ignore her relationship issues.
A transitional-sounding track, “Red Lights,” comes next. It gives the impression of being a symbolic apology by Moody’s apparent romantic partner. Opens into a soft and melodic track called “Easy Bake,” a light guitar melody synergizes with the choir-style harmony. The vocals are delivered somewhat poetically yet whimsically.
“Ree’s Interlude” features Moody speaking a revelation about worthiness over a soulful choir, but like “Red Lights,” it does an excellent job of providing an opening for the next track. “Awe Of You” is an emotionally triumphant track featuring a choir-like harmony. This time, however, it’s over a chugging bass track like “Sticky Situations” or “La La La.” It also features some brass instruments giving a moody feel to the way and offering a compelling counterpart to the soft violins.
The album has a captivating and distinctive sound, tells a story, and holds the listener’s attention. Moody’s singing seems to fall somewhere in the middle of Margaret Glaspy and Billie Eilish, a supporter of laid-back, sassy vocals over hip-hop or lo-fi instrumentals. It’s soothing and relaxing, making it ideal for long drives, quiet study sessions, or casual listening.
