What a tech pack is and why you need one for the manufacturing of clothing

Technical specification, specification pack, spec pack,CAD, BOM (bill of materials), or GWS are only a few terms for a tech pack. In essence, it is a document that you, your garment technologist, and the factory or individual that creates your designs and produces the clothing all refer to. Many of my clients have heard the term “tech pack,” but they don’t fully understand what it means or why they need one, and they frequently question whether the manufacturer should handle it. This article will define a tech pack and discuss its importance.

3 Reasons for Having a Tech Pack

It’s simple to begin designing and preparing when creating a new product or collection without initially taking into account the significance of how you’ll present your designs to the workforce that will assist you in realizing your vision. The standard form used by the fashion industry to describe all the specifications and features for each garment is called a tech pack. Consider these three crucial benefits of a tech pack for your company before moving on with the design process:

1. Having a tech pack can help you stay organized

It’s kind of like having a visual checklist for each style. All information about a garment may be entered into one convenient location up to the time of manufacture. Measurements, reference photos, flats for construction details, and color and fabric samples can all be included in this section. When a product is being developed, there are many different stages that might feel daunting, and if the information is not preserved consistently in a specific sequence, vital data may get lost. To get your product out the door as correctly and quickly as possible, tech packs make it simple to identify what has to be done.

2. Most effective means of communication

Your constantly growing product will pass through so many hands during development and clothes manufacturing that a thorough tech pack is necessary to keep everyone informed. Your clothing will be handled by designers, tech pack designers, pattern makers, sample makers, and contractors, all of whom have distinct backgrounds and work styles. A tech pack with all the information will eliminate any opportunity for interpretation and ensure that your product is consistent from sample to production. It’s also vital to keep in mind that the employees working on your product will also be working on projects for other clients.

The tech pack will operate as a reference for them to use when you leave a manufacturer, pattern maker, etc.

3. Can be delivered anywhere in the world

An excellent tech pack will be so detailed that you could send it to any manufacturer worldwide and they would be able to create your garment without further instruction. A tech pack will lay out everything for you if you are collaborating with manufacturers in other countries or any other remote place that you are unable to visit.

You and your team will save time and have fewer headaches in the long run if you maintain consistent and comprehensive tech packs right from the start of the product development process.
