SINGLE REVIEW: Drifting Away by TAYIHA

Tayiha’s last single release, Not Feeling This, generated a lot of interest for the emerging Australian singer-songwriter. Her new track, Drifting Away, another evocative contemporary pop track, is a stylistic extension—more ballad-like and contemplative—yet maintains similar refined energy and self-assuredness. Featuring a series of stirring melodies, subtle rhythms, and a mesmerising vocal performance from Tayiha, Drifting Away explores the effect of time and change on relationships in an emotionally charged and personalised style. As Tayiha says about her latest track, ‘Drifting Away is a song about the evident shifts within your life as you continue to hold onto something that you don’t want to be affected by change.’ Drawing inspiration from such legends as Alicia Keys, Whitney Houston, and Ellie Goulding, Tayiha became a finalist in the 2021 Queensland Music Awards for her track No Happy Ending, written and recorded when she was just fourteen. Drifting Away is a piano-based track with accessible melodies that conjure a feeling of intimacy. The lyric reflects a sense of resignation, yet it is not a brooding kind but has a sense of openness. The production also reflects this, preserving the intimacy by utilising minimal instrumentation yet creating within that framework quite a gentle and expansive layer of sounds. The song builds gradually, merging pads, unobtrusive percussive elements, and various effects, establishing a dream-like background, in which Tayiha’s narrative is brought to life. With such lines as ‘Moving pages, fading faces’, the focus of Tayiha’s observations feeds into the idea of the acceptance of change, a rich subject for a song and one that pertains to every one of us. With several single releases behind her and support from a host of streaming, radio, and media networks, including MTV, STINGRAY IN STORE, SUPER NETWORKS GRAFTON 1047FM, IT GIRL MAGAZINE, Tayiha is well on her way to heightening her presence in the music world at a local and global level.
