Hi Jru, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
I’ve been great. Thanks for asking.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Greenlight”?
Sure. Greenlight is a brand new smooth and sensual pop song about waiting for someone to decide they want to be in a relationship with you. It’s about the weird place you get stuck in when you’re so sure about them, but they can’t decide what they want.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Yes. I went through this situation with someone from my past.
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
It was great. I had fun, the directors walked me through everything, I even got to play a little drums so that was a plus. Great shooting experience overall for sure.
The single comes off your new album Life For Now – what’s the story behind the title and tell us about the LP?
For the title I was kind of just thinking about the state of my young teenage life and where it could lead to. Life For Now is about reflection. Realizing what life has to offer and everything that you can make happen. It’s a body of work I spent a lot of time sitting with figuring out how things work and also just letting my emotions pour into something that I could go back and check out later. Sort of like a diary. Life For Now is the world reading my diary.
How was the recording and writing process? What role does Washington, DC play in your music?
I recorded and wrote everything alone in my basement. I’ve always worked really well by myself, and I think it has to do with the fact that I know myself so well. Growing up in DC makes anyone who’s from here have a different outlook on music because of Go-Go and its ability to get people moving. People from DC have a great sense of energy and rhythm.
Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
The inspiration was my real life. I was going through everything that I talked about on this record in real time. I think that’s why it hits so hard for some people, because they can feel the emotion in my voice and playing. It strikes a chord with those that have been heartbroken.
What else is happening next in Jru Anthony’s world?
I’ve been producing a lot of dope projects for a lot of dope artists, and I can’t wait for everyone to hear them! Also be sure to make it to a live show of mine to catch this record being played with a little bit of razzmatazz.
