4 Trends That Have Changed Mental Healthcare for Millennials

It is no secret that the last several years have been hard on mental health. This is true for everyone—regardless of age, income, or employment status.

There have been countless studies since the 2020 pandemic that have shown the impact that covid has had on the mental health of students in primary and secondary schools. Plenty of studies have also looked at the impact on parents, and the elderly; and there have been additional studies looking at the impact on the larger economy.

Over the past few years, more attention has finally started to be paid to one part of the population who has truly suffered throughout the past two years: Millennials.

Research suggests that millennials have taken the brunt of the epidemic. Millennials are working full time, many without much job security, without owning a home, and without a lot of sick time at their disposal. This means that putting their health care ahead of their financial security has been exceptionally difficult. Making the choice to take 10 days off to quarantine when accidentally exposed to Covid could mean financial ruin for many people in this situation.

This has put an exceptional amount of stress on many people, resulting in an unprecedented mental health crisis. The good news is, organizations and innovators around the globe have started to take notice of this level of stress.

Innovations in mental healthcare have led to landslide change in mental health support since the pandemic. The largest trend in mental health care is the accessibility of mental healthcare to people online and on their phones. We can see this happening in four major ways:

  1. Virtual mental health counseling
  2. Social media resources that are targeted for mental health care
  3. Mental health resources including blogs and apps, like the Conquer Life app and website. It curates community mental health stories, news, and expert advice tailored to people who are seeking self improvement and mental wellbeing.
  4. Corporate initiatives and healthcare resources that are available online to support individuals and groups

These  trends are making it possible for people to get access to mental health support on the go and at low or reduced cost, which is a huge win for so many people, especially those who are working full time and don’t feel like they have the luxury of spending a lot of money on additional healthcare costs.

Mental health care needs to be preventative health care, and making these resources available online and at the fingertips of those who need them is the first step to helping those who are the backbone of our economy.
