Over the years, the role of costume designers has become more evident in movies, stage productions, and TV shows. A costume designer is tasked with bringing out a character or carefully selecting suitable wardrobe elements. It can be a recreation of an existing costume or an entirely new design, depending on the cast’s role or the director’s wishes. Though it’s a relatively less acknowledged role, there is no doubt that being a costume designer is a demanding job. You must be ready to work long hours on a hectic schedule, gathering and designing the best outfits.
Based in Los Angeles, PinJu Wang is a successful costume designer. Her innate talent and vast experience have helped her cement her spot in the industry. She stands out as a top female designer, known for some of the most iconic costumes, such as those featured in Cocomelon’s commercial. Some of the other commercials her designs have featured in include Samsung, Mini Foodies, My Little Pony (assisted), Mini Brands, and Marvel (assisted), among many others.
Wang is also not a new face in the film industry as she has worked on many films, including Momma Bird, which was voted for best horror at the Dilemmatic Screenplay Contest, and best horror at the World Series of Screenwriting. It was also recognized at the Oaxaca Film festival and Austin Film Festival. Aside from her talent, being a make-up artist has also been a significant addition to Wang’s skill set. She is not only capable of designing costumes but also goes the extra mile to ensure the cast gets the ideal make-up to bring out their character in the best way possible.
Wang also stands out in the industry for her knowledge of different languages. She confidently speaks five languages, including Chinese, Japanese, Taiwanese, English, and Cantonese. This enables her to interact with a wide array of clients, especially in Los Angeles, a city with people from many different countries. Wang says it also helps her interact with directors and the cast, helping her easily understand the assignment for her various roles.
Although she has overcome many obstacles, working on low-budget films is where Wang has been able to gain invaluable hands-on experience, designing the costumes and even doing make-up for the actors. She is capable of executing everything, from planning to shopping and returning items, which is why her incredible talent and costume design skills have helped her make her mark.
Wang’s passion and love for what she does keep her moving. She continually innovates, adapting to different situations, which has allowed her to cultivate her skill set and success. “Every time I look back, I always keep my goal, which is why I’m here, working on movies and T.V. shows—always being proud of myself. That’s how I keep going,” Wang adds.
With a dream to feature in more international films, Wang is currently working on different projects that will undoubtedly help cement her position in the sector. She has just worked on her fourth feature film, Hide, a thriller film that will be on the film festival circuits and possibly clinch numerous awards once it’s released in 2023. Wang’s dream is to join IATSE 705 by the end of the year and work on big movies in the future.
