Director Chad Stahelski Offers Hints About Upcoming “John Wick: Chapter 4”

“This life…follows you. It clings to you. Infecting everyone that comes close to you. We are cursed, you and I.”

The above quote from actor Michael Nyqvist’s protagonist Viggo Tarasov in the original John Wick film might as aptly sum up movie-going audience’s obsession with this action film franchise which for three white-knuckle installments has kept de facto action star Keanu Reeves and us, his rapt and eager admirers, firmly invested in the age-old question of “What can possibly happen next?” Luckily for all of us Dear and Constant Reader, we’ve got a few answers courtesy of our pals over at Variety about where John Wick: Chapter 4 is racing towards next…

A deeper mythology and a ton of ninjas will greet audiences when John Wick: Chapter 4 lands in multiplexes the world over, according to director Chad Stahelski.

“I love mythology,” Stahelski revealed about the upcoming Wick sequel which is said to have the longest runtime of the entire franchise thus far. “I love a good myth. I don’t really believe – at least for the John Wick movies – in a three-act structure. I believe in storytelling and leaving it. You know, we’ve always seen John Wick as Odysseus. So we take the time we need to tell the story. As long as we don’t fall asleep watching it, we keep it going. But I guess there is a bathroom limit.”

Where can filmmakers possibly go after the over-the-top events of John Wick: Chapter 3? According to word ‘round industry campfires, the new Wick film will find Keanu once again going toe-to-toe with some mighty mean hombres with an eclectic blend of weapons such as nunchucks (my personal fave) and handguns. Knowing that fans of the franchise might need a little more than just another action set-piece, Stahelski seems to be offering up that a deep-dive will finally take place which will explore the mythology of the Continental and the rogues gallery of assassins which populate the series of movies.

Theorizing about that exact cocktail and how it might play out in the fourth chapter, Stahelski – who currently serves as the producer on the new Netflix film Day Shift – mused “Ninjas in cars, I guess. I don’t know! It’s always ninjas, man.”

We’ll all find out about exactly what Keanu Reeves is in for when John Wick: Chapter 4 premieres in theatres worldwide on May 23, 2023!
