Weekend Binge Recommendation: ‘Night Court’

If you were not aware, IMDb TV rebranded itself as Freevee, which I now realize is probably pronounced like “TV,” whereas I’ve been emphasizing the syllables like “Quibi.” It’s a free app supported by ads, but there are some good shows and films on there. One show I saw that is on Freevee actually got me excited. That’s the sitcom Night Court.

Night Court is a sitcom from the ‘80s that ran for nine seasons. It takes place in, well, a night court in New York. Judge Harry Stone presides over the court, and the other main characters are the lawyers, bailiffs, and what have you. Most prominent among the cast is John Larroquette, who plays the lascivious lawyer Dan Fielding. The actor won, I want to say, 50 Emmys for playing Fielding? I’m joking, of course, but he did actually win four Emmys for the role and then took himself out of the running for future Emmys.

This is one of those shows that saw its sensibilities shift during its run. When Night Court began, it was a fairly-straightforward sitcom of the workplace comedy ilk. Good, but by the books. Eventually, though, it would become more and more absurd, even more than a sitcom like Newhart. Cartoon characters show up at one point, for example.

For years, there wasn’t really anywhere to watch Night Court. Then, it showed up on the over-the-air channel Laff, but there you were beholden to the schedule of the network. Now, you can watch all nine seasons of an Emmy-winning comedy on Freevee. Sure, you have to sit through ads, but you don’t have to drop any cash.
