1) We’re excited to have this opportunity to speak with music artist extraordinaire Chloey Rose; welcome to our humble pages, Chloey! Before we begin kicking the proverbial Q&A tin can down the dusty summer road, how has your 2022 been treating you?
It’s been an awesome start to the year so far and I am so grateful to the regional and national stations that are supporting my original music! I am so happy that 2022 began with my song Hearts On The Line being awarded ‘One Of The Best Tracks of 2021’ with BBC Introducing in Lincolnshire and then my track Hopes & Dreams this year was named Track Of The Week on BBC Introducing Humberside. This has added to my excitement and drive to spend as much time as possible song writing, recording new music and performing, especially since covid restrictions have been lifted. I am loving the journey of talking to different radio presenters, meeting new people, and seeing the reactions from supporters! There is nothing quite like it!! And now my new single Golden Sun is ready for the summer!
2) Congrats on the brilliant new epic summer pop ballad Golden Sun which is set to premiere on August 12! Prior to any major release of music, do you get little butterflies wondering how your new material might be received?
Yes absolutely! I am really hoping to reach renowned stations such as Radio 1 and Radio 2 and the thought of achieving this type of recognition is incredible and gives me butterflies for sure! I always get so excited and nervous to hear how each song is received by both radio and listeners on social media. Recently receiving interest in my music as far reaching as Australia and America including American blogs and magazines has felt like a step further towards being discovered by a wider audience.
3) What was the genesis of Golden Sun? How did this lovely and earnest tune come into being?
At the beginning of writing Golden Sun, I really felt drawn to writing a song that was going to uplift and help inspire listeners to become the best version of themselves. I am so happy with the result of this song, which has been described as soulful, soothing, uplifting, sunny and a breath of fresh air for those who are looking to add pop acoustic music to their playlists.
The main message I wanted to share was how you shouldn’t be afraid to step out away from your fears, accept the past and when the time is right stepping out from the shadows into the ‘Golden Sun’. Crazily I co-wrote this song in one evening, with my talented musician friend Harry David who produces the music we write together. I feel the song signifies hope and change. I really hope people will be uplifted by the song to have self-belief in what they can achieve if they are brave and keep trying to realize their dreams.
4) You co-wrote Golden Sun with Harry David. Can you talk about the distinctive creativity which Harry brings to the table as a co-writer?
It’s always great to work with Harry, he’s very quirky like me and we bring out the best in each other when working together. I feel when we are co-writing there is always a bit of magic in the air, he’s really driven when it comes to music and he’s so focused on how we can create the next best song together! We both have similar goals in music and enjoy combining our ideas working through the lyrics and melody as we go along. I always joke about us writing a duet, as I feel it would be awesome! We make a great team so the song writing flows very easily. When collaborating we have fun especially when I’m playing with words and we often end up in fits of laughter.
5) When writing solo, which comes first for you – The lyrics or the music?
When writing solo, I usually experiment with certain chords and what feels right. Then I start humming the melody and the lyrics develop. The beginnings of writing a song are always the most exciting for me because it’s the unknown and I usually just flow with the process and see where it takes me. I try to write songs naturally rather than mechanically, without forcing the structure of a song. Sometimes I choose lyrics that best express what I am feeling or experiencing at that time or words that will best deliver the story and imagery that I am portraying through song. Personally, I feel writing can show vulnerability in the writer as feelings and emotions are shared and depending on whether the content is biographical or fictional. I always maintain a little mystery around each songs true meaning, which I believe enables people to create their own understandings and interpretations to the songs and what it means to them.
6) How is Golden Sun similar to some of your past music? How is it different?
Compared to my other releases similarly to Butterfly, I feel this track is uplifting with the intention of leaving you feeling happy and positive. Many of my tracks have focused on the ups and downs of love, relationships, and the frustrations of disappointments we can encounter in our lives yet remain hopeful. My early work such as Golden Dreams and True Love are about hurt, but in many ways reveal how we learn through experience and become stronger. Some of my songs like Sky is falling allow people to reflect and explore different situations such as if the world was to end who would you like to spend your last moments with, whilst Hearts on the Line is a love song. I like to write songs that make people think and that are relatable. I really want people to feel uplifted by Golden Sun. The song is about having self-belief in what you can achieve, and if you are brave and keep trying to realize your dreams moving forward and stepping out “into the Golden Sun”. I feel the song signifies hope and change and I can imagine listeners enjoying this track whilst on holiday, just chilling or on a road trip. It would be incredible to have this track in the background of a film or tv series and reach renowned national radio stations which would be a dream come true!
7) With the release of Golden Sun, will a full-length album be close behind either this year or in 2023?
Absolutely for 2023! I have many songs already written and not shared and myself alongside Harry already have several new songs co-written and not yet released as well as new songs in development….Watch this Space we’re on our way!
8) Who was your producer on Golden Sun and what did that collaboration look like in the studio?
Working with Harry David is very chilled and relaxed, he is multi-talented and produces all the music we co-write together. I feel I can always hear a lot of Harry’s country influences within the production of our songs, we don’t put pressure on writing new songs and regarding the production side we don’t put a time limit on when it has to be completed and just let it happen naturally.
9) What do your touring plans look like for the immediate future? Can we look forward to seeing you on tour soon?
I enjoy performing at every opportunity and participating in events, shows and festivals. During the last month gigs have included three weddings, Trinity Live in Hull, live session on BBC Radio Humberside, the classic car show at Market Harborough through Harborough FM, presenting at York Maze with Siren FM and during the next weeks concentrating on the launch of my new single as well as performing in Leicester on 20th August for the charity music festival GlastonBlaby.
10) You’ve received comparisons to such music stalwarts as Adele and Paloma Faith. How do you feel about these comparisons?
I am very humbled to be compared to such stella musical artists who are both known for their unique voices, performance styles and huge stage presence. I think they are both amazing and keep true to who they are as artists and all I hope to be is a singer-songwriter who is seen as authentic and recognizable.
11) Your music feels quite cinematic and widescreen. Would you ever plie your craft in the world of films and television soundtracks?
Yes! This would be a dream come true! One of my goals is to have my music played on the soundtrack of a television series or film. I am a massive fan of the BBC Series ‘Normal People’ and I feel my music would be placed very well in line with romantic television shows, crime dramas and movies on the widescreen. From a young girl in my first singing competitions, I always stated I hoped to sing on a bond movie and this then developed with songwriting to an ambition to create memorable soundtracks and even my early work such as Golden Dreams had that intention in mind. A girl must have her dreams!! Ooh I forgot to mention I’d like to be a bond girl!!
12) Along a similar track, you’ve established yourself as quite a talented thespian, appearing in various and sundry productions. Is this something you hope to pursue further?
I love to act and look forward to embracing acting opportunities alongside my singing career. My acting experience is varied kick-started by playing a central role in a British Youth Film Academy production alongside television stars. Other successes include receiving ‘best supporting actress’ in a short action film judged in Tampa Florida. One of my favourite acting roles has to be as leading lady Nina in the BBC Production ‘Greenfields and Beyond’ a musical field event performed in the spectacular grounds of Lincoln Castle telling the story of Lincolnshire women and their role in the First World War effort. I have huge admiration for stars who achieve credibility as both a singer and actor, such as Sheridan Smith, I thought her role as Cilla was outstanding as was Olly Alexander from Years and Years in ‘It’s a Sin’. Similarly, as a secondary school teacher in drama, I strive to be an inspirational role model and enjoy developing the talents of my students recognizing how the performing arts can help build confidence, self-expression and self-belief, as it did with me.
13) How did you land upon the path of being such an accomplished musician? Is there a VH1 Behind the Music story you could share with our readers?
As a child all those singing, acting and piano lessons started my journey as well as success in talent competitions such as UK Unsigned and Open Mic UK. As a budding singer-songwriter being selected to attend the UK International Song-writing Festival held in Scotland, alongside 24 participants across the globe was an amazing experience where I shared and created music with a lot of talented musicians providing the opportunity to work with internationally acclaimed songwriters. I believe this taught me the drive and determination to continue progressing in my singing and song-writing and never give up or change who I am as an independent artist.
14) Final – SILLY! – Question: Favorite movie about the music scene – Almost Famous, This Is Spinal Tap or The Thing Called Love?
Out of the three movies Almost Famous is my favourite, I love the funny take on the young journalist following an up-and-coming rock band on their tour and being exposed to ‘sex, drugs and rock and roll’, I find this film hilarious!
However, my favourite movie about an artist being discovered is the latest version of ‘A Star is Born’ starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, what a story! I became hooked by the plot and their interpretation of the characters, and I really relate to the story and how luck as well as talent had a major part to play in her discovery. As an aspiring singer-songwriter I just loved every scene and all songs especially Shallow, not forgetting the chemistry between both leading actors! To me it is one of the best films I’ve ever watched!
