Born in Oakland, California and now based in Atlanta, Georgia, rapper Hakeem Prime takes pride in his musical creations and where he comes from. Hakeem Prime became a member of Datpiff in 2012 and dropped his first official EP Signs in 2019, with the hit single “Slip Up” reaching 1.9 million views. Recently, he released the “Imma Let You Go” music video (which he directed with John Fritz and Zabb Wolfie), which showcases his current mission to chase his inner peace.

VENTS recently interviewed Hakeem Prime about the brand new “Imma Let You Go” music video, which can be read below.

Can you describe your writing and production process? Does the creation of every track occur in similar or different ways? Is there a pattern to your musical style/ process?

The writing was pretty easy it came naturally as I was revising what I had overheard from friends in lock up. The creation of every track is different in my experience there could be some similarities but for the majority its different. I have written many break-up songs including my single “Try It Again” which was a single off my mixtape Lone Wolf via datpiff. My style of right is experimental I’m learning more ways as I go.

Many fans will recognize James Bay’s melody for “Let It Go.” Why did you choose to sample that popular track on “Imma Let You Go”?

My initial thought was to create a piece of work that was unique and self-driven. it just so happens that it sheds light on his song and echoes the urgency for self-love.

“Keep that ego out of your system,” are very insightful lyrics. How do you believe our egos are detrimental to our wellbeing and happiness?

I don’t necessarily think it’s fully detrimental to our wellbeing. Our egos are the centerpiece of how we protect ourselves. It can also sell us a dream that we need protection constantly. Thus, after we buy into that dream, it also sells us on creating a new version of ourself. However, that is detrimental to our happiness because it robbed us blind of our true self and others pure intentions. The ego is very much trauma based and needs self-taming at times.

How do you believe “Imma Let You Go” is relevant to romantic relationships in our society today, both the healthy and unhealthy?

With a healthy relationship it’s beneficial because it echoes the self-love that one had to get to, in order to find the current healthy relationship. For the unhealthy relationships it maps out the awareness that you should have for your own selflove. It starts with you.

What is one important lesson you’ve learned in your music career so far?

Patience.

What would you like fans to know about your upcoming album DèTOUR II and its next single “Love Rants”?

Unfortunately, I have to announce it now DèTOUR II will be delayed. However, we’re going to be dropping the next single called “Love Rants” it’s out on all platforms now! We just hit 300K streams. This is actually a mixtape it will be on datpiff.

“Love Rants” is a love story actually about patience and individual independence in a relationship. I feel like a lot of people leave relationships before they’re even at the peak of its potential and that’s because of fear & insecurities. If you’re not wanting to give another person space at times in your relationship. How will it become sustainable in the future of multiple possibilities.
