Funny Man Steve Martin Receiving Very Own Documentary from Apple TV+

Everyone loves perennial comedian Steve Martin. And what’s not to love? The legendary stand-up, actor and author has firmly held sway over our collective funny-bone’s in one memorable form or another over the last five decades in such memorable films and television shows as The Ray Stevens Show, The Ken Berry ‘Wow’ Show, The Jerk, The Muppet Movie, Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid, The Man with Two Brains, Three Amigos, Roxanne, L.A. Story, Planes, Trains & Automobiles, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Parenthood,  and – most recently – the huge hit series Only Murders in the Building. His onscreen zaniness is matched only by his quick and lovely turn of a phrase in his writings like Shopgirl. Simply put, Steve Martin is a global treasure and it seems only fitting to learn that a documentary celebrating the life and times of Martin is forthcoming.

From our Grand Canyon aficionados over at The Hollywood Reporter comes the brilliant news that Steve Martin is getting the This Is Your Life treatment in an upcoming two-part untitled Morgan Neville, A24 and Apple TV+ documentary.

The Martin documentary is being spearheaded and will be directed and produced by none other than Oscar-winner Morgan Neville (20 Feet from Stardom, Won’t You Be My Neighbor?) who has dazzled audiences in the past with his deep-dive into the land of Fred Rogers (also known to children the world over as simply “Mr. Rogers”). This is no detached and sterile love note from the front, however: Martin himself has agreed to participate in the Apple TV+ proceedings which are ongoing as of this writing.

So, what does the Man of the Hour have to say about all of the attention being lavished his way? Never one to be short on a quip, the modest Waco, Texas-born Martin said of the upcoming documentary that “It’s somebody else’s take. They found a photo of my father in 1944 in Germany, touring Our Town with the USO.”

Martin has been enjoying a renewed public interest in his career as of late, as is evidenced with the recent trio of Emmy nominations he landed for his work on Only Murders in the Building. Though having already written a memoir on his stand-up life in the form of 2007’s Born Standing Up, and with a new memoir forthcoming in which he chronicles some of his work in film (Number One Is Walking: My Life in the Movies and Other Diversions due out this November), there is very little in the way of any sort of onscreen chronicling of his storied life and career. This untitled doc looks to correct that long-standing injustice, and we’re excited for it!
