What precise alchemy goes into the making of a leading man? Is it that indefinable something which radiates from the screen and generates immediate fan reaction and love? Perhaps it’s the way said star squints at camera roguishly, as if the brightness of the room and the weight of the proverbial world are too much for him to fully take in. Could it be in the way he carries himself proudly yet humbly, as if to say, ‘Hey, I’m one of you’? Whatever peculiar magic goes into the building blocks that make up the stars that we flock to see on the silver screen or on the boob tube, one thing is abundantly clear: Joe Keery of Stranger Things has it. If you don’t believe us, just ask our good friends over at Variety who just reported that the actor we all know and love as Steve Harrington is all set for a change of scenery, temporarily eschewing the fertile and spooky grounds of Hawkins, Indiana for the stark and cold beauty of Fargo, North Dakota…
Movie star-in-training Joe Keery of Stranger Things fame will be joining the upcoming fifth season of FX’s Fargo series (based off of the Coen Brothers film of the same name) alongside fellow actors Lamorne Morris (New Girl) and Richa Moorjani (Never Have I Ever). These newcomers to this oddball corner of the television universe will be in the good company of other recently added cast members Jon Hamm (Mad Men, Top Gun: Maverick), Juno Temple (Atonement, Ted Lasso) and Jennifer Jason Leigh (Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle, Road to Perdition).
What sort of madcap adventures will Keery’s mystery character in Fargo get into in the upcoming season, and will it all feel like an incredible all-expenses paid vacation after the horrific goings-on in Stranger Things? Plot details are being held close to the vest, but we do know is that the fifth season of the critically lauded anthology will be set in 2019 and will apparently ask the deathless question of when is a kidnapping considered not a kidnapping, and – most curiously – what if your wife is not yours? Word ‘round campfire has it that Keery will be playing a character called Gator Tillman – and the rest is a blank slate, only to be filled in when the show finally resurfaces (no release date has been issued as of yet by the benevolent overseers of FX).
So yeah, Joe Keery is very likely going to be a huge movie star in the not-too-distant future and while we could spend even more time debating what does and does not constitute such a rare creature, we’ll just reiterate: The erstwhile scene-stealer from Free Guy has it; simple as that!
