Dark Below Releases “Tense” Single

Whoever it was that even suggested the key to a perfect rock single was a bottom end that could crush boulders didn’t see the likes of Dark Below coming this summer, nor would they have any ability to anticipate the heavy but thunderous melodies that make “Tense” every bit the star single it is at the moment.

The music video for this song gives us every indication that keeping all of the frills others utilize on the side is everything to Dark Below, but there are certain extras they don’t mind chasing after – the first and most important one being a sleek arrangement. This is a band that is intent on getting more than a handful of people in their scene to notice them, and this much is very obvious when listening to any part of “Tense.”

Dark Below aren’t losing any of the edge they’ve got coming into the chorus just for the sake of making the hook a little more palatable to the audience – the driving rhythm of the music is giving them the perfect framing to work within, and I would even say that they’ve got the potential to do even more with it when they take it into concert with them. “Tense” is definitely a track that feels a bit more like a template than it does the finished product, but what’s good about this is that it feels like a template this band has been working on for a long time now rather than something they merely picked up from another group of musicians who are trying to get some attention at the moment.

These guitars are in our face from beginning to end, and if there’s some part of this single where excess made some sense, it was this department for sure. I love a crazy solo as much as the next person, but we don’t have to expand on the theme of this music with anything virtuosic for the narrative and the hook embodying it to sound like a grand slam. Dark Below are avoiding the telling symbolism a lot of their biggest influences would lean on in “Tense,” but this doesn’t mean that they’re not following in the footsteps of some pretty big players, all of whom tended to push the envelope in their own times.

They’re rough around the edges but their melodicism makes them one of the more interesting rock groups in their scene at the moment – Dark Below and their new song “Tense” are going to make a big impression on anyone they come in contact with this month, and I feel like this is starting to look and sound like the critical consensus in the grander scheme of things. There’s still a lot that this band is going to need to do if they’re going to find a road out of the underground and into the mainstream spotlight so many acts covet, but for what they’re starting with, there’s no reason to think they don’t have a strong shot at the moment.
