INTERVIEW | Alpha Hugo discusses his “Go Crazy” and “Cancer Symptoms” music videos

Atlanta rapper Alpha Hugo has recently released the music video for “Go Crazy”, where he shows off the extravagant life he’s worked hard for as a first-rate rapper; this follows “Cancer Symptoms”, a more personal track and video which document his battle with Stage III Hodgkin lymphoma. With many sides to his music, Alpha Hugo has many stories to tell in this interview.

At what point in your life did you realize your passion for music?

Music became my passion when I realized I can use it as therapy for myself.

When did that passion turn into the motivation to pursue music professionally?

When I realized this passion provided me the opportunity to impact the lives of others as well. Professionally this choice it’s more so about my journey to find happiness like anyone else. Music makes me happy and it’s a career choice that I love.

Can you tell us what the process was like coming up with the beats, lyrics, and visuals for “Go Crazy”? Was it a long or quick process overall?

When writing “Go Crazy” me and some friends where drinking, dancing and being silly without care and it gave me the idea to write a song that embodied that feeling I had at the time. A carefree and fun dance song. The writing process was fairly simple, however, the visuals were shot very run and gun style and came out dope for what it was, we actually missed some scenes in the video because at the time we had to evacuate the area where we filmed go crazy and we had to cancel the pool party.

What was the moment like when you decided to write and produce “Cancer Symptoms”?

“Cancer Symptoms” was a culmination of some of the tribulations I battled through cancer. I wanted it to be a clear cut of what I was dealing with at the time. I purposely highlighted the passion and dedication I had to get through this disease in this song and video.

I’m dying to live, recording music while going to the bathroom to throw up, putting on a smile for the people around me, scared but still fight, and if I was going to die the odds would be I die in front of the mic cause I was in there so much. That’s how I wanted to go out, like a warrior.

How did you feel mentally and emotionally when creating such a vulnerable track?

When creating “Cancer Symptoms,” I felt relieved in knowing that I am doing what I love.

The vibe of “Go Crazy” is very different from “Cancer Symptoms” and other tracks you’ve released. Why is it important to create a versatile and diverse range of music?

Honestly, it’s always important to be yourself and me creating diverse and versatile music is simply me being who I am, which happens for me like second nature. Growing up, I listened to the best of all genres and it gave me a vast range of music. It’s honestly annoying sometimes but the reason I allow it shine in my music is because it’s human. I don’t force anything and I’m open to being myself, there are a lot more sides of me the world hasn’t seen yet.

You’ve previously mentioned that music motivates you to live. Can you speak more to the impact and significance of music for yourself and even for the world?

Yes, the love for music saved my life while I was fighting cancer. When you love something so much, you’re willing to live for it, so you must find it in yourself to live for what you love. For me it was family, music and the thoughts of being a voice that can change the world. One of my goals is to make an impact the lives of my fans through my music and help them discover the love that they are willing to live for.

Do you have any new upcoming projects and/or releases you’d like to share with your fans?

Yes, my next single is called “Fresh Prince” which releases August 19th 2022. I recently completed my mixtape which will likely release shortly afterwards, with more music to release this year.
