Ditch the Television: Amit Fridman Gets Real About Being Successful

Amit Fridman, one of Philadelphia’s most well-known real estate investors, still loves to stroll around the University of Pennsylvania’s campus when he is in town. “It is just gorgeous,” he says. “Whether classes are in session or everyone is on break, I enjoy walking around its buildings, looking at the architecture and taking in the university’s history. Every once in a while, I also get the chance to talk to a student or two, and I’m always inspired by the next generation of our leaders. I have had some really thought-provoking conversations with them.”

One of them happened last fall. Amit was walking near the Van Pelt Library when he caught the tailend of a conversation two students were having as they sat under a tree. “They were debating why, exactly, some people are successful while others aren’t, including whether it was really based on talent,” Amit recalls. “I stopped to listen, and, true to Penn’s form, they invited me to join in. It turned out to be a really cool hour.”

Amit amassed his own wealth by successfully investing in real estate and cryptocurrency, so he had his own perspective to share. “I said that the main difference between someone who hits their goals and someone who does not is their mindset. The first has the ‘go do it’ mentality while the other one says, ‘Someday.’”

He used his own life as an example during the friendly debate. “I came to the United States when I was 21, and I didn’t have a whole lot of money,” Amit recalls. “I didn’t like how that felt – I could barely afford to go to the grocery store, and I sure wasn’t staying in a luxurious apartment. I wanted better for myself, so I decided that I would make it happen instead of just talking about it. That’s how I became a successful investor in crypto – I got to work immediately and never stopped until I got what I wanted.”

Amit says that he does not believe that some people are destined to achieve while others are not. “Yes, it is true that some individuals have certain personality traits or natural abilities that may put them on that track,” he allows. “That said, if someone really wants something better for their life, there is no reason they can’t work to achieve it in time. They just have to have the right mentality.”

Amit reveals that he threw out the example of a close friend who had been struggling for years to move up the financial ladder, to no avail. “He was a very hard worker, no doubt about it,” Amit recalls. “That was certainly not the issue. When I asked him what he did with his time when he wasn’t working, he said he watched a lot of television in order to relax. That, to me, went to the heart of why he wasn’t getting ahead.”

Television, Amit believes, rots your brain and steals your potential. “My friend was spending upwards of 15-20 hours a week, watching movies and shows. He isn’t unusual – a lot of people do this. Can you imagine what any of us could do if we turned off the TV and decided to learn something new instead?”

Amit told the Penn students that he challenged his friend to do just that. “I suggested that he give it three weeks since it takes that long to form a new habit. He had to turn off the TV and devote himself to educating himself in some way.”

His friend took him up on it. “He had always been an antique car buff, so he went to the library, got some books on car restoration, and started reading. At the end of those three weeks, he wasn’t an expert, but he had learned a lot, so much so that he kept on going. Now he’s working on setting up his own business and helping people to restore old cars. He says it beats the TV any day.”

The Penn students agreed that the man’s life had changed for the better. “Investing in your own mind and in your future is always a smart move,” Amit says. “Whether you want to learn more about crypto, the metaverse, cooking, or something else, just get out there and get going. There is nothing to stop you from doing this, and a year from now, you will be in a totally different place, wondering why you watched TV in the first place.”
