Let’s be honest: Sans Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes in the last couple of seasons of AMC’s The Walking Dead, it’s been a little bit of a slog. Oh, it’s still one of the must-see series on primetime cable, but watching the newer episodes post-Rick is a bit like watching Happy Days after Ron Howard took a powder or attempting to digest the pleasantries of The Andy Griffith Show and Mayberry, North Carolina without the comic genius of Don Knotts; it’s still good…but different good. Fortunately the plan all along was to have Lincoln return in some manner, be it in a feature film or a television movie or perhaps for the final batch of original episodes in the flagship series before it sails off into the television sunset. Now, thanks to last weekend’s annual San Diego Comic-Con and our pals over at Deadline, we have a much clearer image of when and how Rick Grimes will come back into our collective pop culture lives.
Andrew Lincoln and former The Walking Dead co-star and love interest Danai Gurira will be returning as their fan-favorite characters in a brand-new series that is set to take place smack-dab in the middle of that bloody universe. The two announced the plans for the untitled show which is set to continue their love story at a panel at the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con.
In a mic-dropping press release detailing the new series, it was revealed that the show will feature “an epic love story of two characters changed by a changed world. Kept apart by distance. By an unstoppable power. By the ghosts of who they were. Rick and Michonne are thrown into another world, built on a war against the dead…And ultimately, a war against the living. Can they find each other and who they were in a place and situation unlike any they’ve ever known before? Are they enemies? Lovers? Victims? Victors? Without each other, are they even alive – or will they find that they, too are the Walking Dead?”
Set for an initial six episode run in 2023, the new series will welcome back into the fold Andrew Lincoln, reuniting him with co-star Danai Gurira. Both actors will pull double-duty on this new series, also serving as executive producers.
Dan McDermott, Big Wheel at AMC Studios, could barely contain himself when describing a moment that many fans of The Walking Dead have been eagerly anticipating for years: “This is a moment fans of The Walking Dead have been waiting for since Rick disappeared in the helicopter early in season nine, and Michonne journeyed away on a quest to find him the following season. What a great surprise for the fans at this final Comic-Con for the series that launched this universe and made television history. We couldn’t be more excited for a truly epic series finale later this year and to see Andy and Danai return in a new series they helped create, one of three new series coming in 2023 that continues the story of so many iconic and fan-favorite TWD characters.”
You’d better believe that we’ll keep all of our ever-lovin’ readers up-to-date on this new spinoff of The Walking Dead; welcome home, Rick Grimes!
